Highlights
The contest was one that could have easily bit the Cougars. Coming off a road win at No. 14 ranked Northeastern Junior College less than 48 hours earlier, Barton traveled another 250 miles to Parsons to take on a team the Cougars had beaten last weekend by 16 points. It showed early in the contest as Labette built a 6-point midway through the first half. Barton did rally to take a 30-29 halftime lead, but it was not a pretty half for the Cougars.
Barton shot just 28 percent from the floor in the opening half, hitting 11-of-40 shots, including a 1-for-8 effort from behind the 3-point line. Barton three leading scorers – JP Batista, Justin Rose, and Tyler Luke – combined to hit 8-of-27.
The 2nd half, however, was a much different story. The Cougars opened the half on a 6-0 run that grew to 11-2, then 20-5 and eventually 23-7 as Barton pushed its lead to 17 points at 53-36 with just more than 10 minutes to play in the half. Labette was able to cut the lead into single digits at times in the 2nd half, but never threaten to overtake the Cougars.
Barton shot 20-of-30 from the floor in the 2nd half for a blistering 67 percent. The trio of Batista, Rose, and Luke combined to shoot 14-of-19 from the floor in the 2nd stanza. Julian Rose also had a big half, hitting 3-of-5 3-pointers. Batista ended the game with 25 points and 12 rebounds for his 2nd consecutive double-double. Luke added 13 points and 7 boards while Justin Rose finished with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists. His previous high 7 as a freshman at Pratt last season.
