The Barton County Community College men's basketball team snagged itself a prize possession in Kansas for next season. The Cougars signed consensus 1st team All-State selection Aubrey Bruner to be part of its basketball team next season. Bruner was a member of the Class 5A state champion McPherson High School Bullpups this past season.
"I really like the way they play and their coaches," Bruner said of his decision to play for Barton. He chose the Cougars over Coffeyville, Seward, and Hutchinson. "When I visited I really got along with the players and coaches. I thought his would be the best situation for me."
Bruner, a 5-10 point guard, was a 1st team All-State selection by the Topeka Capital Journal, Wichita Eagle, and the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association. He scored 18 points a contest for the 24-1 Bullpups. In the state title game Bruner scored 23 points in an exciting 76-69 double overtime win over Highland Park. During the tournament, he averaged 23 points a game. For the season Bruner also had averages of 5 assists and 3 steals. His Bullpups were state runner-ups his junior season.
McPherson High School basketball coach Kurt Kinnamon said Bruner was a key to the state title and expects him to do very well at Barton County.
"There is no question he was the leader of our team this year. That was his basketball team," Coach Kinnamon said. "I don't think he will have any trouble stepping right in and paying. As he gets stronger he is a going to be a very good Division I prospect. Barton County has itself a very good player.
"Aubrey was a good leader. He got the ball to people in position when they needed it or he could take on a scoring role. He is very hard to contain off the dribble and is very long. He is a great defender who can really guard the basketball."
Bruner also played in the Mid Kansas Basketball All Star Classic at the end of the season, leading his team with 23 points, including 18 in the 2nd half.
