Cougars explosive in home opener, hurlers toss second no-hitter of season
The Barton Community College baseball team scored in every at-bat Tuesday afternoon registering a pair of run-rule victories over the junior varsity squad from Tabor College.
Sitting idle for over two weeks due to weather conditions, the Cougars christened Lawson-Biggs Field for the 2025 season plating 38 runs and surrendering just three hits in the ten innings.
In game one Barton scored four runs in their first at-bat with eleven more crossing in the second frame while getting a three-man rotation combining for a no-hitter on the way to a 17-0 victory.
The Cougars got off to a seven-run start in the nightcap with six additional plate crossings in the second inning for a 15-1 win completing the sweep.
Moving to 3-1 on the young season, the Cougars and Blue Jays will square up again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. from Lawson-Biggs Field in a single 7-inning contest to wrap up the three game series.
Game 1 Highlights
Five Cougars collected two-hits each led by Landon Haines' pair of doubles and 4-RBI performance. Cesar Gomez and Ayden Hadley each drove in 3-RBIs on their pair of hits, Gomez' pair coming extra base style of a double and triple with Hadley beginning the day's scoring launching a 2-run shot deep into the centerfield trees. Also launching the long ball, Hunter Alvord followed his first inning single with a one-out 4th inning solo shot for the McPherson freshman's first collegiate.
Combining with Anthony Treto for the Cougars' 7-inning no-hitter to open the season, Antonio Mendez played a part in Tuesday's no-no striking out four in the first two frames to earn the Lansing freshman's first collegiate victory. Owen Pote spun a scoreless third frame with two strikeouts giving way to Kiernan Meredith shutting down the Blue Jays on five strikeouts in the final two frames.
Game 2 Highlights
Just like in game one, the Cougars' first tallies came via the long ball as Olathe freshman Tyler Janssen launched the first pitch seen over the right field wall.
Later in the opening frame, Colorado native Jaxon Case cleared a full diamond of Cougars belting the freshman's first collegiate dinger in grand slam style capping Bartons' seven run first at-bat. In the ensuing inning, Case put the Cougars out front 10-0 on a two-out, 2-RBI single capping his 6-run production.
Alvord led the Cougars' 13 hits in the nightcap going 3-for-4 driving in three runs. Hadley picked up another two hits including a second inning 1-out triple kickstarting the six run frame.
Sophomore Cooper Tabor made the most of his game two start going 2-for-2 driving in a pair of runs with Mendez following his game one pitching outing with a 1-for-2 plate appearance in the nightcap including a bases clearing 3-RBI triple.
Braden Hauschel picked up the victory going three innings, scattering two hits with four strikeouts. Landon Haines bounced back from a fourth inning leadoff home run to strike out the next two batters of his one inning of hill work as Jackson MacWilliams opened his season fanning one Blue Jay in his solo frame to close out the sweep.
