Cougars sweep Dodge to remain in race for 2nd
The Barton County Community College baseball team kept itself in the thick of the race for 2nd place in the Jayhawk West with a sweep of Dodge City Monday afternoon at Cougars Fields. The contest was a makeup doubleheader from Saturday, which was postponed due to wet field conditions. Barton won the opener Monday 10-2 and close out with a 9-3 win in the nightcap to improve to 15-9 in the West and 27-17 overall. Dodge City fell to 9-19 and 11-33 with the losses.

Highlights
Barton needed the sweep to keep pace in the loss column with Hutchinson in a battle for 2nd place. Hutchinson swept West leader Seward Sunday to improve to 18-9 on the season. Seward still leads the West at 19-5.

The Cougars had trouble in the opening inning of both games. In the opener, Dodge took a 1-0 lead on Cougar ace Ryan Phillips before Barton rallied for 5 of its own runs in the bottom of the inning. Steve Edlefsen punctuated the inning with a 2-run homer to give the Cougars a 5-0 lead. The Cougars added 5 more runs before it ended and won the game 10-2. Phillips, although banged around for 7 hits in 5 innings, allowed just 2 earned runs and improved to 7-2. Andrew Giambrone had 3 hits for Barton in the win and drove in 2 runs as well as scoring twice.

In the 2nd game, Dodge City jumped to a 3-0 lead on Barton starter Ryan Wagner in the opening inning. But those would be the final runs Wagner would give up as he improved to 3-3 on the season with his 2nd straight win. The Cougars cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 1st, then overtook Dodge with a 5-run explosion in the 3rd. Harrison Harber provided the big punch, belting a 3-run homer in the inning to give him a team-leading 6 homers this season. Harber and Jeff Christy each ended the game with 3 RBI for the Cougars. For Harber, it give him 4 homers and 11 RBI in 4 games against the Conquistadors this year.
