Cougars Fall to Cougars at National Championships - Remain in Hunt for Knockout Round

Wichita, KS - It would be a battle of Cougars as Barton County Community College from just up the road took on the upstart Cougars of Coastal Bend College on a HOT 95-degree day in NJCAA Division I Soccer Championship Pool Play.  It would be the visiting Cougars that would strike first when a corner kick by Thomas Williams was headed into goal just inside the left post by Charlie Ward with only five minutes expired on the clock.

That would be the only goal the navy blue wearing Cougars would garner as the royal blue Cougars of Barton County would use a swarming defense and force CBC to play the length and width of the field on tired legs. Barton County found pay dirt at 21:05 mark when the CBC defense lost control of the ball and allowed a BCCC goal to be curved inside the left goal post for the tie.

Barton would score again with 5:33 left on the clock with a ripped shot from the top of the box that found its way past Harry Scott in the top right hand corner.  That would wrap the scoring for the half, and end up being the final goal of the game as neither team found the net in the second half.

CBC had a couple of chance in the second half.  The first came off the foot of Caio Oliveira who just missed a free kick after a BCCC foul on Gabriel Campora; the kick flew just wide right of the goal.  Campora had another crack at the tie a few minutes later but a brilliant stop by the BCCC goalie deflected CBC's best chance.  Fatigue became a major factor as the day's heat, yesterday's tiredness, and the opponent were too much to overcome.

So the boys in columbia and navy finish pool play 1-1.  They still could advance to the knockout championship round, but will need help from Salt Lake City Community College and a 1-0 game vs. Barton County tomorrow to set up a re-match with Barton on Tuesday.
