Volleyball repeats as national academic team champion, Men's Golf also tops in classroom achievement; Sixteen Barton Athletic teams garner NJCAA academic honors #GoBarton

2021 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year

Thirteen athletic teams within Barton Community College were recognized this week by the NJCAA in announcing its 2020-21 Academic Teams of the Year achievements.

Earning a cumulative 3.257 GPA across Barton's twenty-three athletic teams, sixteen of the squads achieved at or above a 3.00 GPA with thirteen placing among their respective sport's Top-20 leaderboard as a NJCAA 820 total teams achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Barton's Volleyball and Men's Golf teams earned the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honor respectively as Barton joined just four other Colleges in having multiple team award winners.

Under Head Coach Alan Segal, the volleyball team won its second consecutive national crown with an overall nation best 3.93 GPA. Last season Segal's squad fell just .03 shy of the nation's top GPA. For the volleyball program overall, the Cougars have won three of the past five team GPA titles. On the court the Cougars returned to the NJCAA national tournament for its nation leading 23rd time, completing the season at 25-6.

Doug Kaiser's men's golf team captured the national crown off the links, compiling a 3.78 GPA in the classroom to earn his first academic title in eleven years at the helm.

In addition to the pair of programs, Barton also led the list of fellow KJCCC (Kansas Jayhawk Community College) members in women's soccer and women's tennis. Head Coach Ousmane Camara's soccer squad carried a 3.60 GPA to rank 18th nationally while women's tennis Head Coach Lyle Stickney's team compiled a 3.78 GPA to place 4th overall nationally. The four programs' respectively GPA were also the top four achievements across all sports teams within all KJCCC membership.
