Six members of the Barton Community College volleyball team received KJCCC West/Region VI Division I post-season honors following the conclusion of the 2021 campaign
Mylena Testoni headlines the selection as the repeat Most Valuable Player, the first consecutive league MVP since Hutchinson's Teresa Wade received the honors in the 2012 and 2013 season. Also landing on the first team was Tasiah Nunnery while Isabella Guedes, Maria Santos, and Hanna Miller earned second team selections as Victoria Da Silva received honorable mention distinction.
The Cougar selections helped lead Barton to its third straight runner-up finish in the conference standings, concluding the season at 13-3 in conference and 24-11 after coming up short in five sets of the region semifinals.
First Team Selections
Testoni won conference player of the week award four times this season, two on the offensive side and two from her defensive performances. Having won the award six times her initial season on the way to becoming a 1st Team NJCAA All-American, Testoni never won the national weekly award until this season in being named the week nine NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week.
The all-around play from Testoni was not only evident in the weekly awards, but within the 17 double-double performances in 35 matches played. On the offensive side Testoni ranked among the West leaders' top three of the major categories: second in kills (347) and third in kills per set (3.04) and hitting percentage (.318). Defensively, Testoni was equally tough in finishing with the 8th best single season dig total of 540 in wrapping up her Barton career fourth on the all-time list accumulating 1014 digs.
Nunnery also put together a strong season in earning 1st team accolades, joining Testoni in the six rotations as a consistent offensive and defensive threat in posting 15 double-double performances throughout the year. Nunnery's 314 kills and 2.91 per set was second on the squad but cranked up her game in conference play at 3.09 per set in ranking 5th on the West leaderboard. Ranking third behind Miller and Testoni in backline protection with 398 digs (3.69 per set), Nunnery's two year total wearing the Barton uniform accumulated a program 8th best 773 digs.
Second Team Selections
Anchoring the defensive line, Miller was voted the Defensive Player of the Week twice in ranking 2nd in the West at 6.15 digs per set. Racking up a program 3rd best 642 digs during the season, Miller accumulated a two-year total of 1166 for the 3rd most in school history. Miller surpassed double-digit digs in 32 of her match appearances including five straight of 20 or more to conclude the season.
Barton's offense began with the setter position as Guedes guided the Cougars' 6-2 or 5-1 attack in earning three conference Setter of the Week awards. Putting up 20 or more assists in all but six of her matches played, Guedes' 8.14 per set ranked 4th within the West's setters guiding the offense to a second best .247 attack in ranking 9th in the nation. Guedes also recorded 15 double-doubles on the season including a career high 64 assists against 4th ranked Utah State Eastern and 24 digs in the Cougars' season ending loss to 14th ranked Seward County.
Voted the freshman of the year last season, Santos was again a force for the Cougars ranking third in kills (206) and kills per set (1.94). Voted the conference week eight player of the week, Santos' season highs were 15 kills against Cloud County and four blocks against Garden City and recording a career high 12 digs at Hutchinson.
Honorable Mention Selection
Rounding out the selections was Da Silva. The honorable mention selection led the Cougars with 55 blocks for .69 per set average from the middle, including attacking on a team 3rd best .396 percentage in the sixteen conference matches. Da Silva's season highs included 11 kills versus Hutchinson, a .692 attack on 13 swings at Garden City, and 5 walls of denial at Hutchinson helping Barton clinch their third straight conference runner-up placing.
