Barton Volleyball serves up sweep to Grizzlies

The Barton Community College volleyball team served its way to its second consecutive sweep at the Barton Gym winning 25-15, 25-16, and 25-14 over Butler Community College.   The victory improves Barton to 5-7 in the Jayhawk and 8-20 overall while Butler drops to 2-11 in conference and 4-25 on the season.  The Cougars travel to Colby Community College on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. first serve before their final home match next Wednesday.

Barton led 9-8 in the first set before scoring five of the next six points building a 15-9 lead.  Butler would cut the lead to four twice but behind the set high four kills from Emily Deterding on five swings the Cougars would outscore the Grizzlies 8-2 down the stretch to capture the opener 25-15.   In the second set the Cougars' Jordan Edelman's four kills and untimely Butler service receiving spurred a pair of five-point runs midway through the set gaining separation coasting to the 25-16 win.

Trailing 6-5 in the third, the Cougars scored four straight grabbing the lead then took the wind out of the Butler sails scoring seven of nine points building a seven point lead.  The Grizzlies cut the lead to five until Barton closed out with six straight and seven of the final eight points winning 25-14.

Attacking at .400 or better for the third time in last five matches, Edelman led the twenty-five kill attack with nine to go along with 2.5 blocks as fellow sophomore Deterding knocked down eight kills on a season high .583 attack.

Despite battling illness all night, setter Mallory McQueen put up twenty assists and eight digs while serving five of the Cougars' fourteen aces.  Lydia Konrade led in digs with fourteen.
