Barton Volleyball wins 5th straight with conference victory at Dodge City

The Barton Community College volleyball team picked up their fifth straight victory as the Cougars rolled to a 3-1 win tonight at Dodge City Community College.  The Cougars took the first two sets with identical 25-20 scores, falling in the third 25-20, then ran away with the victory behind a 15-0 run capturing the match with the 25-4 pounding.    Barton improves to 5-3 on the season and open conference play at 2-0 while Dodge City drops to 2-8 and 0-1 in the Jayhawk.  The Cougars will have a quick turnaround hitting the court again on Thursday hosting the junior varsity squad from Ottawa University in a 6:30 p.m. first serve at the Barton Gym.

Barton broke away from a 17-all first set outscoring the Conquistadors 8-2 down the stretch to capture the opener 25-17.  Another back and forth set ensued but Barton began to find the mark once again late in the set.  Emily Deterding's kill put the Cougars up by two as Dodge City tried to halt the momentum with a timeout out.  A stuff block by Mallory McQueen and Olivia Naccarato increased the lead to three spurring a 4-1 stretch which included a Naccarato kill and an "excuse me" ace serve that clipped the net clinching the set 25-20.

It was all Dodge City in the third set leading throughout and building a ten point 17-7 lead forcing Barton to take its second timeout of the set.  The Cougars responded with a 5-0 run drawing Dodge City's first timeout but the Conqs responded with two straight halting the Cougar surge.  A 3-0 Barton run keyed by consecutive Jordan Edelman kills closed the gap to four but it was as close as the Cougars would come as Dodge City finished off the set winning 25-20.

Any fight or hope for a Conq comeback in the match was quickly diminished as Barton tore out of the gates racing to a 7-1 lead forcing Dodge City's first timeout.  The stoppage of play did little to slow down the Cougars scoring the next three and following a lone Conq point, two more points increased the lead to 12-2 as Dodge City burned their lone remaining timeout.  The red hot Cougars kept the peddle to the metal coming out of the huddle scoring the next thirteen points building the lead out to 23-2 before Dodge City could score again.  Two straight by the Conqs simply delayed the ending as another McQueen-Naccarato stuff block put the final nail in the 25-4 hammering.

Deterding recorded her second career double-double leading the Cougars with fifteen kills on a .278 attack to go along with twelve digs.  Naccarato continued her hot play at the net with a .450 attack hammering down 10 kills to surpass the .400 mark for the third time in the last five games while also recording two solo blocks assisting on four others.   Serving four of the Cougars' seven aces, Lydia Konrade led five players in double digit digs with twenty one.  McQueen put up thirty-five assists with a second best fourteen digs while Ashley Lockwood and Nathalia Gouveia each picked up eleven.
