The Barton Community College Volleyball team struggled Wednesday night and the Colby Community College Trojans capitalized in the 25-17, 25-19, and 25-22 conference win.   Marking only the second loss to the Trojans at the Barton Gym since 2000, Barton falls to 5-18 on the season and 3-4 in conference play while Colby improves to 9-13 and 5-3 in the Jayhawk.

Taking an early timeout trailing 5-2 in the first set, Barton was unable to slow down the Trojans falling behind by eight in eventually losing 25-17.

The Cougars bounced back in the second set going point for point with the Trojans for most of the set.  Following a Colby timeout deadlocked at 17, Barton took a one point lead only to have the Trojans rattle off three straight points to grab a 20-18 lead.  A Barton timeout failed to halt the charge as Colby closed out on a 5-1 run to take a 2-0 match lead with the 25-19 win.

In a two-set deficit and trailing 10-5, the Cougars inched their way back into the set capped by a 3-0 run to tie it up at 15.   The teams traded points through nineteen until consecutive points by the Trojans built a 21-19 lead.  Barton was unable to make up the ground and Colby outscored the rest of the way to win 25-22 and sweep the Cougars at the Barton Gym for the second straight year.

Emily Deterding led the Cougars for the second straight match with eight kills while fellow freshman Jessie Sewell put down five at .308 attack as the Cougars finished the match hitting only .135.  Casey Friesen led with 12 assists while Abigayle Rziha had ten.  Mykela Riedl led defensive effort with eleven digs followed by Friesen and Jennica O'Neil each getting ten.

Barton's next match will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday as the Cougars host No. 18 Hutchinson Community College who leads the conference race at 7-0 and 13-6 overall.
