Nia Baker eyes down penalty kick in the Region VI/Plains District Semifinal

Playing 110 minutes wasn't enough Thursday at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex as it took a shootout to advance the 15th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team past Coffeyville Community College in the Region VI/Plains District semifinals.

The 4-1 shootout result advances the 2nd seeded Cougars (16-3-1) into Saturday's 6:00 p.m. Championship match against 4th ranked and top seeded Butler Community College (18-2-1) as the Grizzlies got past Hutchinson 1-0 in the other semifinal result.  Coffeyville ends their season at 14-4-2 with Hutchinson's coming to a close at 14-4.

Barton outshot the Red Ravens 10-3 in regulation play including a 4-0 shots on goal advantage. Coffeyville flipped the script in the two golden goal periods with a 5-2 edge with four shots between the pipes as both the Cougars' shots were also on frame.

Winning the coin toss and selecting first to toe the 12-yard kick line, Barton's Nina Norshie drew first blood as the nation's leading scorer rattled the net with Coffeyville's leading scorer Thayline Teixeira also pounding the net to drawn even.

Ivanna Faria stepped up in the second slot, rattling the net putting Barton back on top with Baker upping the pressure on the Red Ravens by rejecting Nathalia Luiz on consecutive shots after having to redo the first save due to coming off her line early.

Second on the team in scoring, Aya Saiki's calm strike to the net put Coffeyville on the brink as Baker again put up the denial wall putting the Cougars up 3-1.

Needing a bell ringer in one of the next two rounds to advance, Rin Sato closed the door on the Red Ravens season with a pure strike sending the Cougars into the title game for the second time in three seasons.
