Barton women's soccer falls 2-1 at No. 2 Tyler; Cougars split results in Texas as Norshie makes program history #GoBarton

Barton women's soccer splits results in Tyler, TX

Saturday's riding high was met by Sunday's what-could-have-been bitter feeling as the Barton Community College women's soccer team split results of a two-game trip to Tyler, Texas.

On Saturday the Cougars scored early and often in an 18-0 overwhelming victory over Trinity Valley Community College with multiple program record book impacts including freshman Nina Norshie's sixteen point performance. Returning to the same pitch on Sunday morning, an overtime goal spoiled the Cougars' upset bid in falling 2-1 at No. 2 ranked Tyler Junior College.

The weekend result leaves Barton at 3-1 on the season with Trinity Valley slipping to 0-2 and Tyler remaining unblemished at 3-0.

The Cougars will next turn its attention to conference play beginning at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday hosting Garden City Community College before capping a two-game homestand on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference matchup versus Western Wyoming Community College.

Trinity Valley Recap
The Cougars led 8-0 at the halftime break, tacking on ten more net shakers in the final forty five points in posting the program's second highest scoring output since hanging 19 goals on Independence Community College in September of the 2009 season.

Multiple record book impacts were made on the day including the performance of Norshie. Posting her third straight hat-trick by the 16th minute, Norshie added four more to tie Great Bend native Yesenia Garcia's 2007 program high 7 goals in a contest. Adding two assists to the day's total for 16 points, Norshie surpassed Garcia and 2019 Barton Sports Hall of Fame inductee Shala Giardini's 2009 point total to take over the top spot.

The Cougars distributed 13 assists on the 18 goals, topping the thirteen in the 2009 Independence game, while launching 65 shots to blow past the 60 launched against Hesston College in 2018.

Shivani Balram led the distribution with four assists, the sophomore's first two of the year setting up Norshie's first two goals with an early second half pass setting up Yulisa Valdez' first collegiate goal. Balram moved into a tie for the third best distribution game in program history with thirty-minutes remaining setting up Ivanna Faria's second of three goals in the game.

In addition to Norshie's net rattlers, a pair of Cougars also recorded hat-tricks. Faria began the day's scoring on an assist from Norshie before adding two more goals in second half action. It took Aya Saiki less than nine minutes to record her first hat-trick, posting the first goal with 21:22 remaining in first half action from Norshie's feed then six minutes later finding the net twice from Sofia Morales' dishes in a span of less than three minutes.

Recording collegiate firsts during the contest, Hinata Kojima rattled the net at the 25:50 mark of first half play, Valdez' 41:25 goal in the second half, sophomore Kimberly Guerrero with 33:41 left on Faria's first collegiate assist, and Sofia Morales' late score.

Raianny Lopes and Ashley Melendez split time in goal, turning back one shot in preserving the shutout.

Tyler Recap
The Apaches struck first just 3:34 into the contest on a nifty through ball as Nia Baker's attempt to reject the shot was only partially blocked before rattling the net.

It took just twenty-five seconds to produce the equalizer, Hinano Nakagawa creating the chance after the reset with a though ball to Nina Norshie. Norshie's blast to the far post was turned away by the Apache keeper but the heads up play from Rin Sato sprinting in and one-touching a laser from just inside the eighteen knotted it up on her second goal of the season.

Gridlocked at the half, the Apaches controlled a good portion of the first twenty-four minutes of the second half play before the Cougars gained momentum in the latter half. Barton's best and final scoring opportunity came with approximately two minutes left on Natalia Baltodano's twenty-five yard free kick to the upper-90 but deflected by the Apache keeper off the crossbar.

The winning play was controversial in the eyes of the Cougars leaving a bad taste for an otherwise great performance. A long pass into the mid part of the field appeared to setup an offsides situation but the no call put the Apaches in prime scoring position with a low strike beating Baker for the winner.
