Barton women post shutout over Johnson County advancing to Saturday's semifinal #GoBarton

Barton women's soccer player Francesca Martella goes up for a kick

It took seventy-five minutes but the Barton Community College women's soccer team got the one goal they would need for a 1-0 first round victory over Johnson County Community College Wednesday afternoon at Cougar Field.

The win improves Barton to 11-3-1 but more importantly advances the Cougars to Saturday's 2:00 p.m. semifinal round of the Region VI/Plains District Championship against No. 10 Kansas City Kansas Community College. Johnson County has their season end at 7-7.

RECAP
Behind a slight south breeze, Johnson County outshot the Cougars 6-4 in the first half with a 3-1 advantage on frame but couldn't rattle the nets.

Barton controlled most of the second half possessions including three good scoring chances only to be denied. In the Cougars best scoring chance, it was a matchup of reigning KJCCC Players of the Week as Dahien Cabrera's strike was rejected by Johnson's net keeper Olivia Ways.

Down to the final sixteen minutes of regulation, the Cougars moved the ball upfield with Annika Gerdau taking it down the left side. Sending a beauty of a cross to the backside of the eight, Fatima Leme struck near mid-waist height to one-time it past Ways for the Barton game winner.

The Cougars outshot Johnson 7-2 in the second half in not allowing the Cavaliers any shots on frame the final forty-five minutes.
