20th ranked Barton women's soccer knocked off in Hutchinson #GoBarton

Barton women's soccer player Mercy Azanapo battles Hutchinson's Stef Becerra

Earlier in the season the result was a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes. Wednesday it took just 128 seconds for the Barton Community College women's soccer team to play from behind as Hutchinson Community College won the rematch in knocking off the 20th ranked Cougars 3-0 at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The third straight loss, two to nationally ranked opponents, drops Barton to 5-3-1 in conference play and 6-3-1 on the season while Hutchinson improves to 4-2-2 in league and overall.

Barton will have over a week to regroup before returning to the pitch Thursday, May 6, in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off hosting Dodge City Community College.

Defensive miscues played a part in each of the Blue Dragons' goals, the first coming just 2:08 into the contest as Barton failed to completely clear a corner kick situation. Marah Franke, who sent the initial kick from the corner, received the ball back from the uncleared box from Cheyenne Busker and one-timed a strike from outside the eighteen. Esther Karhayu settled the cross before beating Nia Baker lowside for the early lead.

The game appeared headed to a one goal differential into halftime but the Blue Dragons had one last corner kick in the waning seconds due to another miscure off a Hutchinson free kick. Aimee Maher's corner kick sent the ball close to the near post with Baker redirecting to the Blue Dragons' Lani Dickinson who hammered the rebound top shelf for the two goal lead into the break.

As quick as the first score of the evening was put on the board, it took just 17 seconds into the final period for Hutchinson to tack on another. Maher slipped a pass through the Barton defense to Karhayu in setting up a 1v1 with Baker for a near post goal.

The Cougars outshot the Blue Dragons 16-14 in the contest with Hutchinson winning shots on frame 7-5. Barton had a handful of quality scoring opportunities including Annika Gerdau's post clanking with twenty-eight minutes left but Hutchinson's Kambrian Colborn totalled five saves preserving the shutout.
