Barton women's soccer upset bid falls short 3-2 to No. 9 KCK #GoBarton

A two goal second half deficit proved too much to overcome Saturday for the Barton Community College women's soccer team in dropping a 3-2 loss to 9th ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

The straight loss to nationally ranked opponents drops the Cougars to 5-2-1 in conference play and 6-2-1 on the season while KCK stays unbeaten at 9-0 in league and overall.

Barton's next opportunity to halt its slide comes Wednesday at Hutchinson Community College in a 6:00 p.m. kick at the Salthawk Sports Complex. The contest begins the second trip around the conference slate as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw April 5 at Barton.

The teams played to a 1-all tie after the first forty-five minutes with Barton outshooting the visiting Blue Devils 18-4 and 8-3 on frame.

KCK netted their first goal as Corrine Hughes slipped behind the Barton defense from Melissa Siegel's long pass setting up a 1v1 situation to find the net past goalkeeper Nia Baker.

The Cougars got the equalizer on a 35-yard beauty shaped shot from Annika Gerdau in rattling the net upper-90 with 2:24 left before the half.

Siegel put the Blue Devils back in front just 2:52 into the second half, taking Paige Liston's through ball to pivot and left-foot whack from 22-yards out beating Baker to the far post.

Five and half minutes later Siegel capped her four point day by sending a through ball down the middle where Madison Broeker outran the Barton defense to send it past an onrushing Baker at the top of the eighteen.

A foul taking down Kadin Stinson in the box with 25:43 set up Silvia Cinque for the penalty kick, cutting the deficit in half off the conversion for her first Cougar net rattler.

The Cougars pressed and pressed, launching ten shots in second half action but only four were on frame in coming up empty.

For the game Barton outshot KCK 28-9 but the Blue Devils put seven on frame for the three goals while the Cougars sent twelve between the pipes with net protector Suzie Lopez coming up with nine saves.
