Another late goal handed the Barton Community College women's soccer team a 2-1 defeat Thursday to Cloud County Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Having lost to the T-birds 2-1 in Concordia on a goal with just under five minutes to play, the Lady Cougars clung to a draw before Cloud County headed in a game winner with just under ten minutes left. The loss drops Barton to 3-4-2 in the Jayhawk, 4-4-2 in Region VI play, and 5-5-3 overall while Cloud County improves to 8-2 in conference, 9-2 in region, and 9-3 on the season. The Lady Cougars' next action comes Saturday with a trip to Hesston College for a Region VI kick-off slated for 5:00 p.m.
Barton grabbed an early lead coming at the 16:34 mark as Ariadna Ramirez' perfectly placed through ball found Larissa Fagundes speeding past the defense to bury her 11th net shaker of the season beating T-bird goalkeeper Alanya Hannigan in a 1v1 situation to the near post.
Despite having a 20mph wind at their back, the Lady Cougars could manage just one other shot while Cloud County launched eight including four narrow misses and forcing Barton's Reyna Gonzalez to make a pair of saves.
With the wind advantage flipping to the T-birds in second half action, Barton held firm through the first eighteen minutes until a miss cleared corner kick resulted in Joana Villanova able to toe one through traffic for her ninth of the year in tying up the contest.
A combination of a perfectly executed play and a hesitation on the defense accounted for the game winner as Maryanne de Castro put away Villanova's cross with 9:04 left in the contest.
