Lady Cougars roll to shutout over Garden City #GoBarton

Raley Mantz gets ready to kick ball

Four goals from Raley Mantz and another dominant defensive game powered the Barton Community College women's soccer team to a 10-0 victory Saturday over Garden City Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The seventh shutout of the season improved the Lady Cougars to 3-3-2 in the Jayhawk, 4-3-2 in Region VI play, and 5-4-3 overall record while Garden City remains winless on the season at 0-11 with a 0-9 and 0-10 conference and region record respectively. Barton's next action will come on Monday with a trip to Goodland, Kansas, for a pivotal 3:00 p.m. Region VI contest at second place Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Having won 8-0 in Garden City earlier in the season, the Lady Cougars nearly matched their output in the first half launching 26 shots resulting in six goals. Mantz got Barton rolling just 1:56 into the contest, netting the Derby freshman first collegiate goal finishing off Larissa Fagundes' cross for her fourth assist of the season. Two goals later Thamires Lima distributed her second collegiate assist setting up Mantz second goal with 30:48 remaining in first half play pushing the lead to 4-0.

The Lady Cougars took a two goal lead at the 33:40 mark on skillful back heel goal off the foot of Fagundes from Sydney Sulzman in depositing the Hays freshman's first collegiate assist to the back post. Fagundes would later conclude the Barton scoring with under two minutes remaining in the game on a rocket to the upper-90 far post for team leading tenth goal of the year.

Joining Mantz with a first collegiate goal, Johanna Behrens netted hers with 31:49 left on the first half clock banging a shot off Garden City goalkeeper Perla Enriquez' legs giving Barton a 3-0 lead.

Two more goals would come in the first half within two minutes of each other on unassisted goals as Jessica Simental netted her fifth or the year to far post at the 19:10 mark with Ariadna Ramirez scoring her second of the year with an eighteen yard shot to the upper-90 just out of the reach of Enriquez.

Launching twenty-six shots to the Broncbusters' one in first half action, the second half was much more competitive as Barton put ten in the air with four coming from Garden City.

Mantz helped equaled Barton's earlier season victory margin netting her final two goals within the first twelve minutes of the second frame to join Fagundes in fourteenth place of Barton history in the second four goal performance of the Lady Cougars' season. McPherson freshman Jordan Bruner's third assist of the season came on a cross as Mantz finished as just 3:11 clicked off the clock before Mantz put away another beautiful cross, the next coming from Kayla Gokey's second assist of the year with 33:08 left in the game.

Having a lone goal to her name last season, Shanai Jackson-Brown collected her first net shaker of the England sophomore's career in beating the defense outside the eighteen before taking four dribbles and blasting far post with 17:32 remaining.

Raquelle Hardin stood firm in goal to protect the shutout rejecting three Garden City shots on frame, one in first half play and two coming in the final forty-five minutes.

The ten goals scored by Barton was the most in the series history, surpassing the nine goal marks from the 2005 and 2008 seasons.

Barton stays unbeaten on their home turf against Garden City, improving to 6-0-1 and 13-1-1 in the series.
