Lone goal sinks Barton women in loss to Dodge City #GoBarton

Raley Mantz and Sydney Sulzman battles a player for the ball

Settling for a scoreless double overtime result earlier in the month in Dodge City, a mid-second half goal was all that was needed Wednesday at the Cougar Soccer Complex as the Barton Community College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Dodge City Community College. The result flip flops the teams in the conference and region standings with Barton dropping to 1-3-1 in the Jayhawk, 2-3-1 in Region VI play, and 3-4-2 overall while the Conquistadors move in to fourth place at 2-3-1, 3-3-1, and 5-6-1 on the year. The Lady Cougars will look to get back to .500 on the season this Saturday in a road trip to Pratt Community College for a 2:00 p.m. kick.

Each team had limited opportunities in the first forty-five minutes with the Lady Cougars' Reyna Gonzalez providing a pair of one-on-one clutch saves to keep the net clean.

Barton missed a golden opportunity fifteen minutes off the second half clock with a loose ball in the eighteen finding the foot of Sydney Sulzman but the Hays freshman's launch was blocked at the last second by a heads-up Conquistador defender.

Giving the Barton defense fits throughout the contest, Begona Rodriguez Bravo finished with six shots in the game having five on frame, burying the game winner at the 28:38 left mark from a left side free kick from just outside the eighteen sneaking between Gonzalez and the near post.

As each goalkeeper collected seven saves including a handful of quality net protectors in the contest, the Conquistadors' Courtney Turner saved perhaps her best in the final twenty-one minutes rejecting Tressa Becker's long shot to the upper-90 and intercepting Alejandro Galindo's cross to a wide open Jessica Simental on the back post.

The Lady Cougars would get off another great attempt with five minutes to play but Turner nabbed Kirsty Ashworth's header from Sulzman to protect the victory.
