  • Four Lady Cougar Soccer players sign to play at the next level

    Four players from the Barton Community College women’s soccer team have signed letters of intent to play next season at the NCAA and NAIA levels. The Utah duo of Bianca Barron and Olimpia Bonilla will take their talents to Division I University of Detroit Mercy, Mariana Poveda will head to Albany, New York, to play for The University of Saint Rose on the Division II level, while Millie York will take her defensive prowess to the NAIA level Georgia’s Brenau University

  • Bonilla wins defensive award, seven Lady Cougars earn post-season honors

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team had seven players recently selected to the 2013 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Conference team and one selection to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Junior College Division I All-West Region. Headlining the selections were sophomores Olimpia Bonilla, who was selected the KJCCC Defensive Player of the Year, and Bianca Barron, who was selected to the NSCAA All-West Region Team. Joining Bonilla on the KJCCC first team was freshman Millie York while sophomores Barron and Mariana Poveda were each named to the second team. Sophomores Molly Hausmann and Stephanie Lomas joined freshman Ronnie Johnson on the honorable mention team to round out the Lady Cougars’ honors. The seven selections follow a six selection last season for second-year Head Coach Aaron Avila. Named the Coach of the Year in his first season, Avila guided the Lady Cougars to a 13-4-1 record this season and a 11-1-1 mark in the Jayhawk Conference to finish tied for second in the conference. Spending much of the season in the national polls, the Lady Cougars season came to an end for the second straight season in the Region VI semifinals, falling 1-0 to Johnson County Community College.
  • No.16 Lady Cougar soccer season ends in Region VI semifinals

    A stroke of good fortune is often the difference in playoff time as was the case in the second game of the Region VI semifinals Thursday at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex. Unfortunately for the No. 16 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team, the Lady Cougars were on the flip side of the good fortune dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Johnson County Community College Thursday. The Cavaliers got the game winner 4:33 into the second half from Kelsey Wakefield’s left foot shot from the left wing deflecting off the hands of Barton goalkeeper Stephanie Lomas. Lomas, who was big all game for the Lady Cougars, saved eight shots as the Cavaliers controlled most of the contest. The loss ends Barton’s season at 13-4-1 while Johnson County, 17-2-1 on the season, advances to Friday’s championship contest against No. 5 Butler Community College.
  • No. 17 Lady Cougars shutout Allen County to advance to region semifinals

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 win Saturday over Allen County Community College in first round play of the Region VI playoffs. The No. 17 ranked Lady Cougars, 13-3-1 on the season, will take on Johnson, 16-2-1, in the region semifinals Thursday at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex. The Cougars and Cavaliers fought to an epic 2-2 tie back on October 12 in Overland Park, Kansas, with the winner advancing to play for the Region VI Championship at 10:00 a.m. Friday.

    Having earlier in the week being named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week for the second time this season, Barton Community College women’s soccer player Bianca Barron added the national distinction to her accomplishments being named the NJCAA Player of the Week. Leading the No. 19 ranked Lady Cougars in two victories last week, Barron connected on each of her three shots on goal accounting for eight points to earn her fourth career weekly conference honor as the sophomore from Utah climbed further up the ranks of the Barton history book. In last Saturday’s two goal and two assist performance against Pratt Community College, Barron moved into the No. 2 slot in career goals (50), the fifth best mark in career assists (14), and ranks fourth all-time in career points scored (114).
  • No. 19 Lady Cougars record seventh shutout in 5-0 win at Garden City to wrap up regular season

    Tuning up for the postseason, the No. 19 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team scored five first half goals to cruise to the 5-0 win Wednesday evening at Garden City Community College. Barton ends the regular season at 11-1-1 and 12-3-1 overall while dropping Garden City to 1-10-0 and 1-12-0. The victory also assured the Lady Cougars with at least a second place tie in the final Jayhawk Conference standings with Johnson County Community College and most likely the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region VI playoffs. Barton will now play the waiting game until next week to see who the Lady Cougars will host in first round region play on either November 2nd or 3rd.

    Bianca Barron received her second KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week honor of the season lifting the No. 18 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team in two victories.     The No. 18 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team closed out regular season play Saturday at the Cougar Soccer Complex with a 4-1 win over Pratt Community College. The Lady Cougars score three first half goals in improving to 10-1-1 in conference play and 11-3-1 while dropping Pratt to 2-8-1 in conference and 3-11-1 overall. Barton will conclude the regular season at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Garden City Community College before turning the attention to post-season play. The Lady Cougars appear to be headed to the Region VI playoffs as the No. 3 seed, tying Johnson Community College College in the standings
  • No. 18 Lady Cougars shutout Mavericks in non-conference play

    Stepping out of conference play, the No. 18 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team recorded a 3-0 shutout of Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Wednesday at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Lady Cougars improve to 10-3-1 on the season and drop NOC to 8-5-1. With two regular season games remaining, Barton controls its destiny for at least a second place finish in the conference. The Lady Cougars, 9-1-1 in conference play, will play its last home game this Saturday against Pratt Community College before concluding the regular season October 23 at Garden City Community College. Kickoff for Saturday’s game at the Cougar Soccer Complex is 2:00 pm. followed by the No. 20 ranked Cougar men’s team at 4:00 p.m.
  • Barton’s Lomas awarded top conference goalkeeper for third time

    For the third time in four weeks, Great Bend native Stephanie Lomas has been chosen as the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week. The Barton Community College women’s soccer goalkeeper didn’t face any shots in her 45 minutes of action last Tuesday against Independence Community College but made three big saves Saturday as the No. 20 ranked Lady Cougars tied at No. 14 Johnson County Community College. Lomas’ two surrendered goals came via backside goals, the first off a free kick and the second off a cross in the waning seconds of overtime. In conference play Lomas has only allowed seven goals and has recorded four shutouts which places her third all-time in the Barton history books with fourteen.
  • Seven seconds from a W, No. 20 Lady Cougars settle for tie at No. 14 Johnson

    The No. 20 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team came within seven seconds of upsetting No. 14 Johnson County Community College but settled for a hard earned 2-2 result Saturday in Overland Park, Kansas. The Lady Cougars built a 2-0 first half lead but gave up a game-tying goal with 7.1 seconds remaining as neither team was able to score in the two ten minute overtimes. The result keeps both teams tied for second in the Jayhawk Conference at 9-1-1 with two games remaining as Barton moves to 9-3-1 overall while Johnson is now 12-2-1. Barton will step away from conference play on Wednesday for the first of two remaining home games as Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa comes to the Cougar Soccer Complex for a 2:00 p.m. matchup. The Lady Cougars’ last regular season home contest will be Saturday against Pratt Community College.

    The No. 12 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team earned a hard fought 2-1 win Tuesday at the Cougar Soccer Complex over Independence Community College. An early two goal lead stood for the final fifty-eight minutes as the Lady Cougars survived a second half Pirate charge and strong south wind to capture the victory. Barton improves to 9-1 in the conference and 9-3 overall while dropping Independence to 3-3-2 in conference play and 5-4-2 overall. The Lady Cougars will head to Overland Park on Saturday for a key 1:30 p.m. conference game with No. 16 ranked Johnson County Community College.
  • Second half dooms No. 12 Lady Cougar soccer in battle of conference unbeaten

    Jumping out to a two goal lead Friday at the Cougar Soccer Complex, the No. 12 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team surrendered three second half goals within fourteen minutes in falling 4-2 to No. 8 Butler Community College. With the loss Barton falls to 8-1 in conference play and 8-3 overall while Butler remains perfect in conference at 5-0 and 10-2 overall. The Lady Cougars next home game will be Tuesday against Independence Community College in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off followed by the Cougar men at 4:00 p.m.

    Bestowed the honor of being named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday, Barton Community College women’s soccer goalkeeper Stephanie Lomas added the national honor to last week’s achievements on Wednesday being named the NJCAA Goalkeeper of the week. The honors mark the second consecutive week Lomas has received both the conference and national award and one of two Lady Cougars to ever receive the conference award in consecutive weeks, joining fellow sophomore Bianca Barron who earned the honor in weeks eight and nine last season.

    For the second week in a row, Barton Community College women’s soccer goalkeeper Stephanie Lomas was named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week. Lomas, a sophomore from Great Bend, made the most of her one appearance this week, anchoring No. 16 ranked Barton’s 1-0 victory at nationally receiving votes Hutchinson Community College. The reigning KJCCC and NJCAA goalkeeper of the week, Lomas saved seven shots on goal to ensure her fifth shutout of the season as the Lady Cougars defeated Hutchinson for the first time since 2007 and handed the Blue Dragons their first home shutout loss since 2006.
  • No. 16 Lady Cougar soccer takes care of business, prepares for conference showdown on Friday

    No. 16 ranked Barton Community College women’s soccer team took care of business Sunday at the Cougar Soccer Complex, scoring four second goals in defeating Neosho County Community College 5-1. With the win Barton improves to 8-0 in conference play and 8-2 overall while dropping Neosho to 1-5-1 in conference and 2-7-1. The victory by Barton sets up a pivotal game for the conference top spot at 4:00 p.m. Friday as the Lady Cougars host No. 8 Butler Community College. The Grizzlies, who defeated No. 20 Johnson County Community College 2-1 in overtime late Sunday evening, will bring a 4-0 conference mark and 9-2 record overall.

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team picked up its biggest win of the year Wednesday in Hutchinson as the No. 16 ranked Lady Cougars defeated nationally receiving votes Hutchinson Community College 1-0. The win marks the first time since 2007 Barton has defeated Hutchinson and only the third time in the series history. With the victory the Lady Cougars stay unbeaten in conference play at 7-0 and improve to 7-2 overall. Losing its second straight game, Hutchinson drops to 5-2 in conference and 6-2 overall.

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team swept this week’s awards, winning both the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player and Goalkeeper of the Week honors. Sophomores Bianca Barron and Stephanie Lomas earned the honors after helping to Barton to two conference victories last week as the Lady Cougars improved to 6-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall. In addition to the conference award, Lomas also earned the national distinction of being named the NJCAA Goalkeeper of the Week for her performance. Barton, ranked No. 16 in the latest NJCAA and NSCAA national polls, travel to nationally receiving votes Hutchinson Community College today for a pivotal 4:00 p.m. conference matchup in Hutchinson. Hutchinson, after taking a 4-1 loss at Coffeyville Community College last week, was previously ranked at No. 12 in the NJCAA poll and now stands at 5-1 in conference and 6-1 overall.

    Since dropping the first two games of the season, the Barton Community College women’s soccer team won its sixth straight game Saturday by recording a 3-0 shutout of Allen Community College. The No. 15 NSCAA ranked Lady Cougars recorded its fourth shutout to improve to 6-0 in conference play and 6-2 on the season while giving Allen its first conference loss dropping the Red Devils to 3-1 and 5-3 overall. Looming for the Lady Cougars is a key conference matchup Wednesday at No. 12 nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College.

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team dominated Dodge City Community College in the first half then cruised for a 7-0 conference victory Wednesday in Dodge City. The Lady Cougars scored seven first half goals, five coming from sophomore standout Bianca Barron, then utilized their deep bench play to cruise to their third conference road shutout of the season. The No. 15 NSCAA ranked Lady Cougars win marks their fifth straight to improve to 5-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play while dropping Dodge City to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in conference. Barton will look to extend their five-game win streak on Saturday in hosting Allen County Community College in a 2:00 p.m. conference contest at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team came from behind Sunday in Kansas City to score three second half goals to win 3-1 over Kansas City Kansas Community College. The No. 16 NSCAA ranked Lady Cougars improve to 4-0 in conference play and 4-2 overall while keeping KCK winless at 0-6 in conference and 0-7 overall. Barton will next play at Dodge City Community College on Wednesday then return home to the Cougar Soccer Complex for a 2:00 p.m. Saturday contest against Allen County Community College.

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team posted its second consecutive road shutout by defeating Cloud County Community College 1-0 Thursday afternoon in Concordia. Scoreless in the first half of play, Barton scored with 34:59 to play in the contest as Aliya Marshall found the back of the net courtesy of a Bianca Barron pass. The No. 16 NSCAA ranked Lady Cougars improve to 3-0 in conference play and 3-2 overall while keeping Cloud County winless in conference at 0-2 and dropping the T-Birds to 1-2 overall. Barton will put to test their modest road winning streak on Sunday as the Lady Cougars travel to Kansas City Kansas Community College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

    The Barton Community College women’s soccer team knocked Coffeyville Community College from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 3-1 victory today in the season’s home opener at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The No. 15 NSCAA ranked Lady Cougars improve to 2-0 in conference play and even their overall record at 2-2. Coffeyville’s loss drops the Red Ravens to 2-1 in conference play and 4-1 overall. Barton will play two games in the upcoming week beginning this Thursday at Cloud County Community College followed a Sunday contest at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Barton improves to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in Jayhawk Conference play while dropping Cowley to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Lady Cougars will play its first game of the season at home on Sunday as the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens come to the Cougar Soccer Complex for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

Opening the 2013 season by playing the first of two games against ranked opponents this weekend in Tyler, Texas, the No. 14 NSCAA ranked Lady Cougars will next play No. 4 ranked Tyler Junior College on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
  • Lady Cougar Soccer tabbed third in conference prediction

    Building upon last season’s third place finish, the Barton Community College women’s soccer team is looking to better the third place prediction in the recently released Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) coaches poll. Ranked preseason No. 14 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, the Lady Cougars open the season August 31st in Tyler, TX as Barton will be taking on nationally ranked opponents in successive days.
  • Lady Cougars get first test, Alumni game to follow

    The Lady Cougar soccer team will get it's first test of the 2013 season in this Saturday's scrimmage as they welcome Bethel College to the pitch. Game time will be 2pm at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex with the annual alumni game to follow at 4pm.
