The Barton Community College wrestling team came away with one national qualifier, five placers and a 9th place team finish in Saturday's hosting of the NJCAA South Central District Championships. 

Charles Neuman (165-division) punched the Cougars lone ticket to the 2024 National Championships held March 1st-2nd at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA.

As a squad, Barton compiled 32 points to finish ninth in the stout field of 10 teams which featured five ranked inside the nation's top-15. 14th ranked Labette Community College upended 3rd ranked Pratt Community College 159.5-155.5, for the program's first ever District Championship.

The Cougars nearly came away with a second qualifier as Kaden Blake (149 division) finished seventh falling just a spot outside a qualifying berth.

Opening his day, Neuman made quick short work needing 26-second to produce a fall over Carl Albert's Mason Gordon to lock himself into the semifinals and clinch his national tournament berth. The freshman's hopes of a title bout took a slight turn in the semifinals dropping a 10-0 major decision to top ranked and eventual runner-up Cayleb Atkins of Pratt. Suffering a second straight major decision, Neuman settled for fifth place receiving a medical forfeit victory over Northwest Tech's Micah Castro for a 2-2 day on the mat.

Blake's first time on the mat following his opening round bye was met by top ranked and eventual 149-division champion Jaden Tow Lance of Carl Albert State. Sent to the consolation side, Blake suffered a 17-3 major decision before rebounding concluding his freshman campaign on the positive side distributing a 13-5 major decision to Cloud County's Tarik Adkins.

Three other Cougars reached the 7th place matches but came up short, Avery Wolf (133-division), Keenon Gonzales-Brown (184 division) and Dorian Hippen (197 division).

Stephen Baldwin (141-division), Deryk Yott (157-division) and Nathan Agudzi-Addo (285-division) were the lone Cougars to come up empty in their matches.
