Barton women's golf places within top nine for third straight National Tournament appearance.
The Barton Community College women's golf team placed in the nation's top nine for the third straight season as the Cougars tied for the 9th spot at the NJCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships held at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club located in Ormond Beach, Florida.
Barton finished at 267-over for a 1419 total four round score, climbing up from an opening 12th spot to tie Mesa Community College for the ninth position of the program's tenth straight national tournament appearance.
The Cougars got off to a rough start in Monday's opening round as the heat and humidity played a role throughout for the Cougars and the tournament field.
Barton opened with a 366 for the 12th spot overall but adjustments and despite round two interrupted by rain, the Cougars bounced back with their best score of 334 as the round stretched over two days. Returning to the course Wednesday for a 6:30 a.m. tee time to finish up the second round, the Cougars sat in 9th at the completion but still had round three to play later that morning.
Shooting a 353 in slipping to 10th, the weather again took its toll on not just Barton but the tournament as a whole as the Cougars lost their second highest player on the leaderboard while the event implemented a 54-hole cut to include the top fifteen teams and any individual in the top twenty-four not playing on a team. Barton closed out the tournament in Thursday's final round with another 366 as Mesa shot a 357 to catch the Cougars.
Mathanee Pandee led the Cougars with a 35th placing overall in the 72-player field, recovering from an opening 94 to card rounds of 84-86-87 finishing at 63-over 351.
Shaving twenty-one strokes from round one, Paulina Villavicencio jumped up to the 27th spot with a 7-over 79 second round score but finished with 94 and 92 rounds to slip back into the final 45th spot at 67-over 355.
Mia Trousdale stayed the most consistent out of the Cougars' entries in placing 48th overall, improving from day one's 94 with rounds of 88 and 86 before Thursday's final round of 90 concluded the tournament at 70-over 258.
Tied with Villavicencio for 50th at the top of Barton's day one leaderboard with the opening 90, Paige Barnes slid just two spots the rest of the way for a final 52nd position with rounds of 95-87-97 to finish up at 81-over 369.
Unfortunately for Pawinee Sukasem, the freshman's season came to an end due to sickness during the third round after carding rounds of 92 and 83 and in the 41st position of the leaderboard and at the time, Barton's second best performance through the first two rounds.
