Second quarter run leads Barton women to road win at Cowley #GoBarton

A 9-0 second quarter run was the only separation the Barton Community College women's basketball team needed Saturday afternoon leading wire-to-wire for a 63-52 road win over Cowley College inside the William S. Scott Gym.

Tied 19-19 with six-minutes to play in the second quarter, four different Cougars keyed the crucial 9-0 stretch putting Barton in front with a lead they would never relinquish.

The Cougars built their largest lead of 17 behind a 12-4 start in the third stanza and later matching it in the fourth to put the Tigers in the taillights in rolling to the regular season sweep over Cowley.

Winners of five straight, the Cougars move into third place in the league standings at 12-4 and 17-5 overall while the Tigers drop their fourth straight falling to 5-11 in conference play and 11-11 on the year.

Barton's next test comes Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. hosting 18th ranked Butler Community College as the Grizzlies took the first go around in El Dorado 55-41.

Neither team shot well on the afternoon, the Cougars at just 38% with Cowley at 27% as Barton held a slight five rebound advantage including 14 offensive boards leading to a plus eight edge in points in the paint.

Playing its' second straight game without leading scorer Vera Ojenuwa, Barton utilized a deep bench as seven of the 10 Cougars to see the court reached the scoring column.

Vivian Onugha flirted with her ninth double-double of the season dominating inside dropping a game high 22 points on 11-of-21 shooting and pulled down a team high nine rebounds including five on the offensive side.

Producing an all-around performance, Grace John added 14 points with seven rebounds and distributed a game high five assists.

Making her second straight start in the absence of Ojenuwa, McKenna Vogl matched her career high set Wednesday evening scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and corralled four of her eight rebounds on the offensive end.

Shooting a frigid 2-of-17 from behind the arc including a 0-for-9 start, Macie Smith assisted in the key second quarter 9-0 run dialing up Barton's lone trey made in the opening half.

Quezia Bertoni added seven points converting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe while the conference leading assists leader finished with three assists and two rebounds. Emma Toombs helped the Cougars to a 9-0 edge in bench points adding four all of which coming in the opening frame during an early 5-0 Barton run.

Four Tigers reached the scorebook with all four finishing in double- figures led by Hattie Pyle's 17 points. Ndack Mbengue and Anna Przyszlak finished with double-double performances. Mbengue added 15 points and pulled down a game high 14 boards while Przyszlak finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jaiden Smith concluded the scoring for Cowley with 10.
