Stapleton leads four Barton women's basketball players garnering post-season honors; Cougars produce another historical season of achievements #GoBarton #RoarCougs

Barton Women's basketball post-season honors

Four members of the Barton Community College women's basketball team received post-season recognition following the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.

The accolades began following the Region VI Division I Tournament with the Cougars' season ending 63-58 in the semifinals to No. 2 ranked Seward County Community College as Jaylin Stapleton, Taylor Regan, and Irene Chukwudi were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Completing the season 23-10 and in third place of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) West Division at 14-7, the Cougars landed three on the All-West teams led by Stapleton's repeat first team selection. Regan repeated second team conference honors while with sharp shooting Mallory Miller earning honorable mention conference distinction.

Stapleton repeated All-Region VI Division I honors in landing on the this year's second team with Regan also landing in the top fifteen of the region in garnering honorable mention recognition.

Jaylin Stapleton
Rewriting the Barton record book in game, season, and career free throw categories, the 5'5" gritty guard was the heart and soul of the squad as the little engine that could recorded two games of over 39 points to average 15.2 points per game.

Week sixteen of the season encapsulated the year Stapleton produced in not only earning the KJCCC weekly player of the week award but the NJCAA's national recognition in averaging 33 points, 7 rebounds, and 8.5 assists, to go along with 92% shooting from the foul striped in playoff victories leading the Cougars to its first Region VI semifinal game since 2014.

Stapleton began that big week with a forty point effort for the program's second highest scoring output draining seventeen made free throws to reset the program top single game mark, a second best nineteen charity attempts while dishing out a game high five assists to go along with 10-of-16 shooting from the field including 3-of-6 behind the arc.

In the next game facing a Cowley College squad that handed the Cougars a seventeen point loss earlier in the season on the Tigers' home court, Stapleton buried half her shots from the field, was perfect from the free throw line, and hauled down ten rebounds while dishing out twelve assists to post the Cougars' first triple double of recent memory advancing Barton to the semifinal round.

Taylor Regan
A double-double machine, Regan chalked up fourteen such achievements in her sophomore campaign in averaging 12.0 points and 11.6 rebounds per contest. Leaving her mark as the program's second best rebounder in history, the top rebounder in Region VI set the program record for most in a game with twenty-five and tied the defensive haul of eighteen.

A three-time KJCCC player of the week recipient, Regan won back-to-back awards in week eleven following double-double performances in a pair of road games hauling down eighteen rebounds each game with twelve coming on the offensive glass.

A late Saturday evening in Liberal was symbolic of her contribution to the team's performance, securing eight offensive rebounds including a key board with subsequent kick-out to Stapleton putting Barton out front with under thirty seconds to play in the Cougars eventual overtime loss.

The Region's leader shooting over 57% from the field, Regan also helped the team to a record breaking performance from the free throw line in shooting over 76% from the stripe.

Mallory Miller
Miller led Region VI in 3-point shooting efficiency, knocking down 43.3% of her 178 shots from beyond the arc. The accuracy landed second on the program single season performance, ranking only behind her record setting freshman campaign.

Eclipsing the thirty point mark in her final season of donning the Cougar uniform, Miller earned the week seven KJCCC player award after finishing a point shy of a new career high in dropping thirty-three points. Leading the Cougars to the road win at Neosho County, Miller was 10-of-19 from the field including knocking down the six of her ten shots beyond the arc, sank 7-of-8 from the charity stripe, and had an all-around floor performance of grabbing six rebounds and a steal to go along with four assists.

Miller would post another big game against the Panthers in the first round of the Region BI playoffs, scoring thirty-one in part to 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc to go along with a perfect twelve trips to the free throw line tying the program's single game best performance set by Regan in her freshman season.

Falling short of meeting the program minimum attempts at the line, Miller's 85.7% (48-56) from the free throw line was three percentage points higher than Stapleton's record season with her career percentage of 86.7% also ranking well ahead of Stapleton's career mark.

Irene Chukwudi
The fourth sophomore member of the squad to earn post-season honors, Chukwudi closed out her Barton career with consecutive double-double performances. Grabbing eight of her team leading fifteen rebounds on the offensive glass, Chukwudi provided a key ingredient to Barton's quarterfinal win over Cowley including dropping in sixteen points and rejecting four Tiger shots.

Facing the 2nd ranked Saints in the semifinals, Chukwudi rejected six more shots, grabbed eleven rebounds, and scored fourteen points in twenty-five minutes of court time.

Accumulating eighty-one rejections of the opponents' shots, Chukwudi finished just outside the program's top five single season shot blocking chart.

As a team, the squad made a mark in five of the program's best single season performances including raising the best free throw percentage bar to an incredible 75.1% in draining 578 of their 770 charity tosses.
