Monday night at the Barton Gym was historic for the Barton Community College women's program as the 2019 Cougars lambasted the Red Devils of Allen Community College 104-46.
Improving to 16-7 on the year, Barton moves into a third place tie in the Jayhawk West at 9-5 with coincidentally its next opponent on the schedule as the Cougars travel to Pratt Community College Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. tip at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena. Allen County suffers their seventh straight defeat in falling to 1-13 in conference play and 3-21 overall.
A 16-0 first quarter run was indicative of how the night would go as the Cougars were burying three-pointers, grabbing rebounds, distributing the wealth, and playing stifling defense.
Right smack in the middle of it all was Taylor Regan's cleaning the glass, dumping in points, and dishing dimes on the Albert, Kansas, sophomore's historic night. Beginning the stretch feeding Mallory Miller's three-pointer, Regan hauled down three rebounds and scored three points before ending the run distributing to Connor Keith's deep trey to beat the halftime buzzer.
Despite not playing ninety seconds of the 4:14 for all intents and purposes game deciding run, Regan's tallies contributed to a record breaking twenty-five rebounds while adding twenty-two points for her tenth double-double of the season to go along with a season high six assists and two blocks. The Windex count surpassed the twenty-four rebounds in a single game barrier shared by the achievements of Beth Lebsack and Chris Garner from the 1982 and 1979 seasons respectively.
All fifteen players participated in leading the Cougars to its largest series margin victory, including reserve player Jade Phillips for the final two plus minutes of the game. Having gone 3-for-8 in the leadoff position for the Cougar Softball team earlier in the day, the Erie, Colorado, freshman's appearance on the L.T. and Sheila Fleske Court became the first Barton athlete since 2006 to participate in two different sports on the same day as ChrisDell Harris achieved the feat between regional play of basketball and track and field.
Holding Allen County to just four points in the opening ten minutes, Keith's trey from across campus to beat the buzzer increased the lead by eight into halftime before Barton hammered the Red Devils by nineteen in the third frame in surrendering a mere six-pack of points.
Four other Cougars reached double figures as eleven players contributed to Barton's third highest output of the season. Leading a forty-eight point production from the reserve players, Taylor Nichols posted a career high nineteen points as the Dodge City sophomore scored thirteen in the second quarter alone including knocking down the first of her two treys on the night.
Coming up a point shy of a new career high, Natasha Dolinsky was perfect on two shots from behind the arc towards a fourteen point contribution as the Cougars drained 50% of their 22 shots from long range. Sharp shooter Mallory Miller canned four of her five triples to tally twelve points while point guard Jaylin Stapleton just missed a double-double with twelve points and nine assists.
Two Red Devils accounted for over half of Allen County's points as Ariel Walker and Jakira Wilson matched fourteen point productions.
