It was a chilly Wednesday night on the hardwood for the Barton Community College women's team as the Lady Cougars suffered a dismal shooting night in a 71-51 defeat at Garden City Community College. Shooting just 27% from the field and 56% from the stripe, the Lady Cougars also gave the Broncbusters eighteen extra opportunities in turnovers leading to the loss in Barton's first road game of the season. Garden City improves to 3-2 on the season in dropping Barton to 4-2 as both teams have split their first two games of the conference season. The Lady Cougars' next test will come this Saturday as Butler Community College comes to the hill for a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

Despite trailing by six at the end of the first quarter and shooting just 13% on 2-of-15 shooting, Barton was in the game but couldn't stop Garden City until after a 7-0 run to begin the second. Tack on six additional turnovers to match the first quarter gifts and another stretch of nine unanswered Broncbuster points buried the Lady Cougars in a sixteen point hole headed to the locker room.

The Lady Cougars put up a fight early in the third, cutting the deficit to eleven twice, the last coming with 6:20 left in the quarter. But Barton would go cold the next three minutes and Garden City would tack on eight more points to push the lead out to nineteen and never let the margin shrink to under fifteen the rest of the game to hand the Lady Cougars their first road loss.

Jaylin Stapleton was the lone Lady Cougar in double figures scoring seventeen on 4-of-7 shooting including 2-of-3 from long range and 7-of-9 from the stripe. Micaela Jellison led the rebounding with nine being joined by Irene Chukwudi in each scoring seven.

Jessica Carrillo led four Broncbusters in the double-digit column with sixteen in matching Stapleton's long range shooting while going perfect at the charity line in six tries and distributing six dimes. Jada Washington added twelve with Abigail Freen and Talia Roberts each contributed eleven. Shakendra Tilley helped Garden City to a six rebound edge by hauling down nine boards including four on the offensive glass.

Butler is also coming off their first road loss of the season when they come to town on Saturday as the 4-2 Lady Grizzlies lost 72-58 at No. 8 Seward County Community College Wednesday night to split their opening conference games as well.
