Roenfeldt breaks school record as Lady Cougars dominate Conquistadors

The Barton Community College women's basketball team dominated Saturday evening's action at the Barton Gym blowing out a shorthanded Dodge City Community College squad 100-55.  Having took a loss in Dodge City back in early December, the taste hasn't set well with the Lady Cougars as Barton held the Conquistadors to just fifteen first half points before scoring thirty-four of their own in the third period as seven players reached double figures in hitting the century mark for the first time of the season.  The victory helps solidifies Barton's standing to host a first round playoff game improving to 11-10 in the Jayhawk and 14-11 overall.  Dodge City, who played the contest with just five players, dropped their third straight to fall to 4-17 in conference play and 4-21 overall.  The Lady Cougars next action comes Wednesday as Barton travels to No. 2 ranked Hutchinson Community College for a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Sports Arena.

Holding Dodge City to just 26% shooting from the field, the Lady Cougars capitalized on rebound opportunities controlling the glass for a dominating forty-six rebound edge as three players recorded double-double performances.  In the process the Barton faithful witnessed school history as sophomore Katrina Roenfeldt pulled down a record eighteen defensive rebounds surpassing the 1984 mark set by Sheila Hubert.  Roenfeldt also grabbed two on the offensive end finishing in a tie for fourth best single game performance of twenty rebounds.  Adding nineteen points to the night including 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, the Dodge City native recorded her third double-double of the year while also leading the team with four steals to go along with dishing out three dimes.

Leading all scorers on the night was freshman Micaela Jellison coming off the bench for a career high twenty points sinking a perfect ten charity tosses while grabbing twelve rebounds.  Megan Jirak also had a monster night scoring thirteen points and hauling down seventeen rebounds including seven of the twenty-three Barton offensive rebounds.  Regan Unruh added eleven including a perfect six trips to the free throw line while Jalisa Jones, Baylee Robinson, and Lauren Welsch each contributed ten points with Jones matching a career high with five assists.

Denis Ortiz led the Conquistadors burying 6-of-13 shots from beyond the arc finishing with nineteen points.  Sada Smith joined the night's double-double club scoring thirteen and grabbing twelve boards to go along with a team high three assists.  Alexus Johnson, who lit up the Lady Cougars for twenty-eight points in the team's first meeting, didn't reach double figures until late finishing with twelve points.
