Barton women double-up Warriors in final tune up

The Barton Community College women's basketball team wrapped up its non-conference portion of the schedule Wednesday night pulling away for a 98-47 victory over the junior varsity squad from Sterling College.   Leading by fourteen at the break, a 9-0 run to begin the third quarter set the tone for a thirty-three point output tacking on twenty-nine more in the final frame in building the lead out to as much as fifty-two points.  The victory improves the Lady Cougars' season record to 3-1 headed to its conference opener Saturday at 2-2 Colby Community College.  Tip-off time set for 6:00 p.m. at the Community Building.

Five Lady Cougars reached double-digits as all twelve hit the scoring column.  Great Bend freshman Lauren Welsch led the way with fourteen points while tying two others for the team lead with five assists.   Micaela Jellison and Megan Jirak each had twelve with Jellison tying the team lead with five assists while Jirak posted her first double-double of the season grabbing ten rebounds.  Joining Jellison and Welsch off the bench contributing to sixty-two bench points on the night, Ashley Holler and Stormeigh Mattison dropped in eleven each in rounding out the double-digit scorers with Mattison's seven thefts leading the way of the Lady Cougars' twenty-six steals on the Warriors' thirty-six turnovers.

Tara Proffitt and Mayda Stallbaumer led Sterling in scoring with twelve each with Stallbaumer leading in rebounds with six while Betsy Giles added ten points.
