    The state of Tennessee and the Memphis area has been a stock of talent for the Barton Community College women’s basketball program in recent years. Earlier this week the Lady Cougars announced the signing of Jalisa Jones becoming the fifth player from Tennessee compiling the 2015-16 roster.

Ridgeway High School’s Oreona Brown and Alexus Bryson, who helped lead their school to a 24-2 season spending most of the year as Tennessee’s top ranked high school, will be joined by Manassas High School’s Shyanne Stevenson as a triple-threat Volunteer State connection for the 2015-16 Lady Cougars.

    Two days after being named the conference player of the week, Phikala Anthony of the Barton Community College women’s basketball team can add a national honor to top off her historical week. The reigning Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, Anthony was also named late Wednesday as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) selection for the player of the week.

    The season for the Barton Community College women’s basketball team came to an end Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Region VI Tournament at Wichita’s Koch Arena losing 60-46 to Coffeyville Community College. The Lady Cougars fought off a rough start to trail by one at the break but couldn’t overcome a tough possession night of twenty-nine turnovers in seeing the season come to a close. Barton, the fourth seed out of the Jayhawk West, finishes the season at 19-11 while the top seed out of the Jayhawk East improves to 24-8 and marches on the semifinal round to take on Seward County Community College.

    Scoring fifty-one first half points Saturday night at the Barton Gym, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team fought off a Northwest Kansas Technical College second half rally to cruise to an 88-66 victory. Barton, the fourth seed out of the Jayhawk West, improves to 19-10 on the season advancing to Wednesday’s Region VI Quarterfinals while Northwest Tech ends the season at 7-22. The Lady Cougars will take on the top seed out of the Jayhawk East, the 23-8 Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens at 1:00 p.m. at Wichita’s Koch Arena. The winner will advance to Friday’s semifinals against the winner of Seward County Community College and Cowley College.
  • Barton women wrap up home playoff game with 86-79 win over Cloud County; Anthony sets school record

    Needing the win to secure a home playoff game, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team shook off a pesky Cloud County Community College team for an 86-79 victory Wednesday at the Barton Gym. Leading for most of the game, a pivotal 7-1 stretch in the waning moments pushed Barton’s advantage out to eight with 1:34 to play as the Lady Cougars would hold on to secure its first home playoff game since 2011. Wrapping up the fourth seed out of the Jayhawk West, Barton improves to 8-8 in conference play and 18-10 for the regular season while Cloud County finishes in the eighth spot at 4-12 and 11-18 on the season. The Lady Cougars will begin Region VI playoffs on Saturday with free admission to fans as Barton welcomes Northwest Kansas Technical College to the Barton Gym for the 5:30 p.m. first round tip-off.

    The Barton Community College women’s basketball team was outscored down the stretch Saturday night losing 65-59 at Pratt Community College. The Lady Cougars led by eight with five minutes to play but were outscored 18-4 the rest of the way including 11-1 in the final three minutes to drop their third straight game at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena. Still controlling the fourth spot in the conference standings with one game left to play, Barton drops to 7-8 in the West and 17-10 while Pratt’s hopes remain alive to catch the Lady Cougars improving to 6-9 and 16-13. Barton will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday as the Lady Cougars host Cloud County Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
  • Hot shooting Lady Cougars win easily over Colby

    The Barton Community College women’s basketball team scored the first seven points and never looked back Wednesday night at the Barton Gym rolling to a 78-51 victory over Colby Community College. Shooting over 50% for the first time since November, Barton led by fourteen at the break and scored forty-four second half points to snap a two game losing streak. Solidifying its hold on fourth place in the Jayhawk West, Barton improves to 7-7 and 17-9 while dropping Colby to 4-11 and 11-18. The Lady Cougars have two games remaining in the regular season with a two-game lead on fifth place Pratt Community College who stands next on the schedule. Barton and the Lady Beavers will square off in a 6:00 p.m. Saturday contest at Pratt’s Dennis Lesh Sports Arena.

    The second meeting with nationally ranked Hutchinson Community College resulted in much the same results as the first time as the Barton Community College women’s basketball team was outmatched 63-40 by the No. 1 ranked Blue Dragons. After winning the first two games of a tough four-game seven day stretch, Barton drops its second straight contest to fall to 6-7 in conference play and 16-9 overall. Winning its 115th straight home game and 32nd consecutive Jayhawk West contest, Hutchinson improves to 12-0 and 26-0. The Lady Cougars will get a much needed week’s rest before hosting Colby Community College at 5:30 p.m. on Homecoming festivity night taking place on Wednesday, February 18.

    Holding a seven point halftime edge, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team went frigid in the second half falling 60-46 to Butler Community College Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. In a tale of two halves, the Lady Cougars’ 41% first half shooting went north dropping to a season low 10.5% as Butler held Barton to under 30% for the second time this season. The loss didn’t immediately hurt Barton in the conference standings but drops the Lady Cougars to 6-6 in the West and 16-8 overall while Butler solidified its third place standing at 8-3 and 18-6 on the season. Barton wraps up its current three-game five-day stretch with another tough conference matchup on Wednesday as the Cougars travel to No. 1 ranked Hutchinson Community College for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off time at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

    The Barton Community College women’s basketball team got off to a great start Saturday night at the Perryman Athletic Complex pulling away for a 66-46 win at Garden City Community College. Barton solidifies its fourth spot in the standings improving to 6-5 in Jayhawk West play and 16-7 overall while sending the Lady Busters to 3-8 and 12-13. With only a full day’s rest, Barton will have a short turnaround before facing Butler Community College on Monday at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Cougars will then conclude their tough three-game five-day stretch with a Wednesday trip to top ranked Hutchinson Community College.

    Bouncing back from a disappointing loss on Saturday, the Barton Community College women pulled away for a sixteen point halftime lead Wednesday night at the Barton Gym cruising to a 74-55 win over Dodge City Community College. Outrebounding the Lady Conquistadors by twenty-eight in the team’s earlier meeting in Dodge City, Barton again dominated the boards this time by twenty while also holding Dodge City to thirty-four percent from the field. The victory gets Barton back to .500 in conference play at 5-5 and 15-7 on the season while Dodge City drops its seventh straight in falling to 1-9 and 10-14 on the season. Barton will next play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Garden City Community College before a quick turnaround to face Butler Community College at the Barton Gym on Monday.

    If the Barton Community College women’s basketball team had a chance to upset No. 6 Seward County Community College Saturday night at the Greenhouse, the Lady Cougars had to make the most of its possessions. Giving the ball to the Lady Saints for the fourth most times in school history, Barton turned the ball over thirty-nine times resulting in a thirty-point 78-48 loss in Liberal. The loss snapped a three-game win streak dropping Barton to 4-5 in Jayhawk Conference play and 14-7 while Seward County bounces back from a narrow loss to the nation’s top ranked team improving to 7-1 in conference and 19-2 overall. Playing the last two games on the road, the Lady Cougars will return to the Barton Gym for its next action, hosting Dodge City Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip.

    Snapping a seven-game losing streak in Concordia, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team dominated Cloud County Community College most of Wednesday’s contest in winning 73-56. The third straight victory gets the Lady Cougars to .500 on the conference season at 4-4 while improving to 14-6 overall and dropping Cloud County to 1-7 in the Jayhawk and 8-13 overall. Barton will conclude its two-game road stretch with on Saturday as the Lady Cougars travel to No. 6 ranked Seward County Community College for a 6:00 p.m. tip at the Greenhouse.

    The Barton Community College women’s basketball team got hot in the second half Saturday at the Barton Gym defeating Pratt Community College 69-52. Shooting just shy of 58% in the second frame, the Lady Cougars had two key stretches beginning with an 8-1 run early in the half to gain separation then put the game out of reach with a 10-2 run at the seven minute mark in capturing the victory. The victory on Hall of Fame night was the second straight win improving Barton to 3-4 in Jayhawk Conference play and 13-6 overall while dropping Pratt to 3-4 and 12-9 overall. The Lady Cougars will be on the road for the next two games beginning this Wednesday traveling to Concordia for a 6:00 p.m. conference matchup against Cloud County Community College.

    The Barton Community College women’s basketball team shook off a slow start Wednesday to snap a four game losing streak defeating host Colby Community College 61-50 at the Community Building. Responding to an early 9-0 run by the Lady Trojans, Barton scored the next seventeen to lead by ten at intermission. Carrying the momentum into the second half Barton rattled off seven points in the first five minutes increasing the lead out to seventeen. The win wouldn’t come easy for the Lady Cougars as Colby cut the deficit to five points late but 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch sealed the victory. Barton improves to 2-4 in Jayhawk Conference play and 12-6 overall while Colby slips to 3-4 and 10-10 on the season. The Lady Cougars return to the Barton Gym on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip against Pratt Community College.

    Concluding a brutal five-game nine-day stretch with consecutive games against nationally ranked teams, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team just simply couldn’t match up with No. 2 Hutchinson Community College falling Wednesday night at the Barton Gym 73-45. The fourth straight conference loss drops Barton to 1-4 and 11-6 overall while Hutchinson improves to 4-0 and 18-0. The Lady Cougars will get a much needed rest until a January 21 trip to Colby, Kansas, for a 6:00 p.m. conference matchup at the Community Building against Colby Community College.

    There was little the Barton Community College women’s basketball team could do Monday evening at the Barton Gym as hot shooting No. 8 ranked Seward County Community College used a huge first half to cruise to the 86-52 conference win. The Lady Saints shot an unbelievable seventy-four percent from the field including connecting on 7-of-12 in building a 55-25 halftime lead. Barton battled in second half action but Seward County never laid off the peddle for the thirty-four point win. Barton’s third straight loss drops the Lady Cougars to 1-3 in the Jayhawk and 11-5 overall while Seward County remains unblemished in the conference at 4-0 improving to 16-1 overall. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as Barton will play its fifth game in ten days as the No. 2 ranked Hutchinson Blue Dragons come to the Barton Gym on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.

    For the second straight game the Barton Community College women’s basketball team dug a hole it couldn’t get out of as Butler Community College provided the shovel in a 61-37 loss at the Power Plant Saturday afternoon in El Dorado, Kansas. The Lady Cougars’ shooting woes and turnovers mounted allowing Butler to build a sixteen point first half lead going on to hold Barton to its fourth lowest output in school history. The loss drops Barton to 1-2 in Jayhawk play and 11-4 overall while Butler improves to 2-1 and 12-4 overall. Barton will have the next two games at the Barton Gym beginning with Seward County Community College on Monday followed by a Wednesday contest against No. 2 ranked Hutchinson Community College. Tip-off for both conference games scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
  • Lady Cougars’ rally falls short in home conference loss to Garden City

    The Barton Community College women’s basketball team couldn’t recover from a frigid shooting night and costly turnovers Wednesday night at the Barton Gym as the rally fell on the short end 52-47 to Garden City Community College. The loss drops Barton to 1-1 in Jayhawk play and 11-3 overall while Garden City picked up their first conference win to improve to 1-2 and 10-7 overall. The Lady Cougars will head back to the conference road traveling to El Dorado on Saturday to take on Butler Community College in a 2:00 p.m. tip at the Power Plant.
  • Lady Cougars dominate the glass in conference opener at Dodge City

    The Barton Community College women opened up the conference season Monday night with a 77-65 win at Dodge City Community College. The Lady Cougars closed out first half action with a 8-1 stretch to lead 33-27 then blew the game open at the Civic Center midway through the second half with nine straight amidst a 14-2 run in cruising to the win. Dominating the boards 60-32 against the Lady Conquistadors, Barton had two players with double-double performances and a third in double-digit rebounding. The victory improves Barton to 11-2 while dropping Dodge City to 9-6 on the season. The Lady Cougars will have a short turnaround before hosting Garden City Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

Getting two wins at the Hutch Classic held in the Hutchinson Sports Arena, the Lady Cougars ride a three game win streak in improving to 10-2 while dropping the Lady Eagles to 3-8. Barton’s next action won’t come until December 30 as the Lady Cougars host Northwest Kansas Technical College in a 5:30 p.m. contest before beginning conference play January 3.

    It wasn’t the type of game to write home about but the Barton Community College women's basketball team did enough positive things to capture an 84-75 win Friday over Allen County Community College at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The victory moves Barton to 9-2 on the season and drops Allen to 2-12. The Lady Cougars will wrap up play Saturday in the Hutch Classic at 1:30 p.m. against the junior varsity squad from Central Methodist University who are coming off a 94-39 drubbing to the host No. 2 ranked Blue Dragons.

    The Barton Community College women's basketball team experienced highs and lows over the course of the weekend’s Best Western Angus Inn and Cougar Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym. After shooting a season low field goal percentage in a 87-75 loss to Otero Junior College, the Lady Cougars bounced back with an impressive 72-55 win over Independence Community College on Saturday. The 1-1 weekend moves Barton to 8-2 on the season heading into this weekend’s action in Hutchinson for the HCC Classic. The Lady Cougars will play both Friday and Saturday at 1:30 p.m., first taking on fellow conference member Allen County Community College then wrapping up the Classic with the junior varsity squad from Central Methodist University.

Barton will have a few days rest before getting set for next weekend’s action in Hutchinson for the HCC Classic.
