Cougars run winning streak to 4 games

The Barton Community College women's basketball team rolled to a pair of wins over the weekend at the Hutchinson Classic then beat the Southwestern JV at home Monday night to run its winning streak to a season-high 4 games and even its mark at 6-6 on the year. The Cougars were lackluster at times in a 75-59 win over the Friends JV Friday at the Sports Arena then played their best basketball of the season in a 95-77 win over Northwest Shoals (Ala) Saturday afternoon. Barton cruised to an 89-74 win over the Southwestern JV Monday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars will wrap up the 1st semester with a return trip to the Southwestern JV Friday in a last-minute replacement to the schedule.

Highlights
The Cougars were on top of their game for the most part Saturday afternoon against a Northwest Shoals team that came to Hutchinson with a 7-3 record. Barton went on an 11-0 run in the 1st half to take a lead the Cougars would not again relinquish. Alisha Fanshier started the run with a 3-pionter to cut into a 15-11 Patriot leads with just more than 14 minutes to play in the opening half. Raven Adams added a traditional 3-point play on a layup and Dionne Harris added a layup to put Barton up 19-15. Cerissa McMillan capped the 11-0 run with another 3-pointer at the 11-minute mark to give Barton a 22-15 lead.

Barton made that a double digit lead the 6:50 left on a jumper from Christina Caddy and pushed the margin to as high as 16 on a 3-point play by Harris for a 41-25 lead with 5 minutes left in the half. Barton ended the opening half hitting 18-of-30 shots from the floor for 60 percent. The Patriots briefly took the lead under double digits at 54-45 early in the 2nd half but Barton pushed it out to 63-47 with a 9-2 run. The lead grew to 27 – 83-56 – with 7 minutes to play in the game. Adams led Barton with 22 points followed by Caddy with 21. Also in double figures were Fanshier with 16 and Harris with 11. Freshman Shea Shoemaker grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and handed out 5 assists. Fanshier also dished out 5 assists and led Barton with 3 steals.

Barton opened play in Hutchinson against the Friends JV Friday afternoon with a less than stellar effort. Barton turned the ball over 26 times and made just 37 percent of its shots. The win was never in doubt as Barton led by double digits from the 14-minute mark of the 1st half on and led by 20 or more much of the contest. Netanya Jackson scored 16 to lead Barton with Harris netting 12 and grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double. Fanshier scored 13 in the win and led Barton with 5 assists. McMillan added 10 on 3-of-3 shooting from 3-point territory.

Barton was again on the lethargic side of things to open play Monday against the Southwestern JV, trailing as late as 25-22 with 7:32 play in half before closing with a 21-10 run and a 43-35 lead at half. Barton quickly pushed that lead to double figures in the 2nd half and led by as many as 29 with 7:33 left as the Cougars played much better for most of the 2nd half before a late Moundbuilder rally cut in the that margin. Jackson scored a career-high 20 in the win while Harris recorded another double-double – her 4th – with 11 and 11. Caddy added 17 points, Fanshier 14 and Shea Shoemaker 12. Fanshier again led Barton with 6 assists followed by 4 from each Shoemaker and Caddy. Shoemaker and Jackson each missed a double-double by a single rebound.

Barton will be at Southwestern Friday after Labette dropped the scheduled contest for Saturday in Labette recently. That will be the final contest for Barton during the 1st semester. The Cougars will open up Jayhawk West play January 5th at Concordia against Cloud County.
