Barton loses tough contest to Garden in West action
The Barton Community College women's basketball team had its 3-game winning streak snapped with a tough 69-66 home loss to Garden City in Jayhawk West action Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars fell to 0-3 in the West with the loss while Garden stays unbeaten in West action with a 2-0 mark. Barton is now 7-9 overall and Garden is 6-10. The Cougars will go in search of West win number one this weekend at Butler with a 5:30 pm tip at the Power Plant in El Dorado. Barton will be at Dodge City Monday in a 5:30 tip as well.

Highlights
Barton fell behind immediately as Garden scored the game's 1st 6 points and led the entire opening half with the largest lead coming at 8 points on numerous occasions.  But Barton closed the half with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to just a single point, 36-35, at intermission. Not much defense was present from either team in the opening half as Garden better than 50 percent of its shots and Barton nearly 50 percent.

The 2nd half saw the Cougars take their 1st lead of the game with the opening hoop of the half on a jumper from Annie Kassongo. The teams traded the lead for the next 5 minutes before the Cougars went on a 10-2 run to take a 47-42 lead on another jumper from Kassongo. But Garden countered with an immediate 11-1 run that gave the Broncbusters a 53-48 advantage with 10 minutes to play.

Barton would spend the final 10 minute trying to catch the Broncbusters to no avail. The Cougars still had life to the final though following a 3-pointer from Alisha Fanshier with 7 seconds to play that made it a 69-66 lead. The Broncbusters missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 4 seconds to play but failed to get off a shot in the final seconds in an attempt to send the game to overtime.

Fanshier scored a career-high 23 points and the freshman from St. John hit 5-of-7 3-point attempts during the contest. She also led Barton with 8 rebounds and 5 assists – both career-highs as well. Kassongo added 17 points while Raven Ward tossed in 16 and dished out 7 assists. LeMesia Abbott led 3 Broncbusters in double figures with 18 while point guard Victoria Naylor dished out 10 assists.
