Barton wins 96-56 at Colby

Barton wins 96-56 at Colby
The Barton County Community College women's basketball team had a lot of big battles last season with Colby. Saturday night the rivalry was renewed for this season but the stakes were not nearly as high. The last time the two teams played was for the Region VI title last season in a game that went to the wire. Saturday at the Community Building in Colby Barton won easily, 96-56, in a game that featured a Barton team on probation and a Colby team in the middle of the pack in the Jayhawk West. But with the win Barton continued to show it was one of the top teams in the West as well as the nation, improving to 19-3 overall this season and 7-1 in the West at the midway point of the conference race. Colby fell to 3-4 and 7-16. Barton will be off until Saturday when they travel to Pratt to take on the Beavers.

Highlights
The game was seldom in doubt at the Cougars jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the opening 5 minutes of action and Colby rallied to cut the lead to 21-18 with 11 minutes to play in the half. That is when the Cougars pushed the gas pedal down. Barton went on an 11-0 run in 3 minutes to make it 32-18. With Barton up 34-24, the Cougars went on another run, this time a 20-3 run over the final 7 minutes of the half to take a commanding 54-27 lead to halftime.

The 2nd half saw Barton's lead stay in the 30's much of the time, reaching a high of 43. The Cougars shot 62 percent for the contest, hitting 39-of-63 shots from the floor, including a 10-of-23 effort on 3-pointers. That bested Colby's 8-of-27 effort in a match up of the top 2 3-point shooting teams in the West. The Cougars dominated the boards as well, out-rebounding Colby by a 43-24 margin.

Barton put all 5 starters in double figures, led by Andrea Barber with 22 points and 6 assists. Inga Muciniece turned in her 2nd highest outing of the season with 20 points to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season and her 7th in 8 West games. LaToya Jackson added 12 while DePrice Taylor and Ipek Turkylimaz each had 11. Jamie Schroeder scored 18 to lead Colby.

Barton will be on the Saturday to take on Pratt to begin the 2nd cycle through the West. Barton beat Pratt earlier this year in Great Bend, 101-36.
