Cougars drop road contest at Cowley County, 2-1 for the season
The Barton County Community College women's basketball team has not started the season off with an easy slate of contest. Just 3 games into the season, Barton has played the No. 16 ranked team and the top two teams in the Jayhawk East. Barton survived the 1st two of those tests but was unable to come away with a win in its 1st road contest of the season. Barton fell to defending Jayhawk East Champion Cowley County Tuesday night in Arkansas City, 63-60. The loss drops the Cougars to 2-1 for the season with 2 games this weekend at the Colby Classic.

Highlights
Barton took an early lead in the contest, bolting to an 8-0 advantage on the host Tigers in the game's opening 3-plus minutes. Barton continued to hold the lead through the opening half of action but the Tigers trimmed the lead to 28-25 by intermission.

In the 2nd half, it was Cowley that came out on a run, scoring the half's 1st 7 points for a 32-28 lead it the Tigers' 1st lead of the game. In the defensive struggle through the opening 10 minutes, Barton recaptured the lead at 36-34 with 10 minutes to play. But Cowley followed with a 12-3 run over the next 4 minutes to take a 46-39 lead and put the Cougars in a hole late.

Barton never got completely out of that hole, but trimmed the margin to 48-46 with still 4 minutes left following a Brianna Buchanan 3-pointer. But Cowley immediately answered as Megan Schoenfeld hit a trey of her own to push the lead back to 5. That lead would grow to 59-49 with just less than 2 minutes to play before Barton gave it one last furious rally, but it was too late.

Onikute led Barton with 9 points and 9 rebounds from her point guard spot. The sophomore also led Barton with 4 assists. Sunshine Misa-Uli and Stephanie N'Garsanet each added 8. Cowley's Schoenfeld and Radoslava Bachvarova combined for 46 of Cowley's 63 points led by Schoenfeld with 25 and Bachvorava with 21.

Barton will travel to Colby this weekend to take on Brown Mackie and Independence. Both games – Friday and Saturday – will tip at 2 pm at the Community Building as part of the Colby Classic.
