All-State guard from Bishop Carroll signs to Barton women

All-State guard from Bishop Carroll signs to Barton women
The City of Wichita has been good to the Barton County Community College women's basketball program the past couple of years so it is no surprise Coach Lane Lord – a former high school coach in Wichita – has returned to Wichita to fill his roster again. This time he landed a 1st team All Class 5A guard in Bishop Carroll's Jessica Halsig. Halsig led her team to a 21-4 record and a 4th place finish at the 5A State Tournament this past season. The 5-11 guard was also an All-City selection this past season.

Halsig was the 2nd leading scorer in the City League last season at 15.7 points a game, scoring 362 points in 23 games. She also grabbed 3.5 rebounds from her guard spot and connected on 45% of her 3-point attempts as she led Carroll to the City League title. Halsig hit 82% from the free throw line. Her talents have landed her in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game in August.

Her ability to play the 2 or 3 guard positions is something Coach Lord believes will benefit the Cougars and make Halsig a threat offensively and defensively.

"Jessica is an impact player who will be expected to come in and contribute immediately. She can really shoot the 3-point shot as well as put the ball on the floor and hit the pull up jumper," Coach Lord said. "We are excited to get a player of Jessica's caliber at Barton County. She is a hidden gem who has Division I size and ability."

As a junior, Halsig was key instrumental in Carroll's 3rd place finish at the state tournament as well as the City League title that season as well. Carroll was 5A State Champs her sophomore season when Halsig came off the bench for the Eagles.

"She played her prep career for one of the winningest coaches in Kansas high school history – legendary coach Don Racine. Jessica has excellent speed and is very fundamentally sound both offensively and defensively."
