  • Barton women hoops ink 6 players for 2005-06 season

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has signed 6 players for the upcoming season to go along with 11 returning sophomore giving the Cougars a deep squad for Coach Lane Lord’s 2nd season at the helm of the program. Barton inked 3 in-state and 3 out-of-state players.
  • Former Barton star takes over Oklahoma State women’s program

    Former Barton County Community College men’s basketball player Kurt Budke will take over the reigns of the Oklahoma State University women’s basketball program it was announced Monday afternoon. Budke spent the last 3 seasons as the head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he guided them to an 80-16. Budke was an All-Conference player for Barton County during his playing days in 1981. The Salina-native becomes the 6th coach in Oklahoma State women’s basketball history. Joining him will be legendary Seward County Coach Jim Littell, whom Budke named as Associate Head Coach in one of his first moves with the Cowgirls.
  • Ewalefo, Uli earn All-Conference honors for Cougar women

    A pair of Barton County Community College women’s basketball players earned All-Jayhawk West honors for their performance this year in helping revive the Barton County women’s hoops program. Sophomore Vivian Ewalefo and freshman Sunshine Uli were named to the team with Ewalefo grabbing 2nd team honors and Uli earning honorable mention status. The two 1st-year players help the Cougars go from 8th in the West to 4th in the West and advance to the Region VI Championship game for the 1st since 2000. Ewalefo also earned honorable mention All-Region VI.
  • Cougars dreams of Region VI title dashed by Seward

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team was looking to reestablish itself as the top team in Region VI. No other team has more Region VI titles – 8 – that the Cougars. But standing in the way was the new powerhouse of the region – Seward County. And the new powerhouse showed they are still the king of the hill. Seward used a big 2nd half to hand Barton its worst loss of the season, 63-38 in the Region VI title game at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. The loss ends Barton and 1st year coach Lane Lord’s season at 22-12. Seward County, 32-2, will move onto its 4th NJCAA National Tournament next week at the same venue in Salina.
  • Barton continues payback tour during Region VI Tournament

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team is currently on a tour of paybacks. The 2nd of those came in the Region VI Tournament semifinals as Barton took care of Coffeyville at the Bicentennial Center Tuesday afternoon. Barton knocked off the Red Ravens, 71-64, to move within a single game of advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament for the 1st time in 5 years. Barton will get the opportunity to seek one last payback at the Region VI tournament Wednesday when the Cougars tangle with Jayhawk West champion Seward County at 6 pm. Barton (22-11) and the No. 6 ranked Saints (31-2) will met for the 3rd time this season.
  • Cougars end Cowley 23-game winning streak; headed to Region VI semis

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team garnered a bit of revenge Monday night but more than anything moved themselves into the semifinals of the Region VI Tournament with an upset win over Jayhawk East champion Cowley County. The Cougars, who lost by 6 points to Cowley earlier this year in Great Bend, handed the Tigers just their 2nd loss of the season with a 59-50 win at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. The win for Barton moved the 21-11 Cougars into today’s semifinal against Coffeyville (23-9) at 3 pm at the Bi Center. Cowley ended a memorable season at 30-2.
  • Barton advances to Region VI quarters with win over Neosho

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team accomplished post season mission one – a 1st round win in the Region VI playoffs. The Cougars moved into quarterfinal action in Salina Monday with a 70-37 win over Neosho County Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym. The win will move the Cougars (20-11) forward in the Region VI bracket to take on the Jayhawk East Champion Cowley County (30-1). The two will play the final game of the day Monday at the Bicentennial Center, tipping at 7 p.m.
  • Barton comes up short in upset bid at Seward; hosts Neosho in playoffs

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team gave the No. 6 ranked Seward County Saints all they wanted Saturday night before coming up just short on the home floor of the Jayhawk West Champions. Barton fell 62-60 to the Saints in the Greenhouse in Liberal, where Seward is now 189-2 in the past 14 seasons. The loss dropped the Cougars to 19-11 overall this season and 9-7 in the Jayhawk West. Seward County wrapped up the West title with a 14-2 mark and a 28-2 overall record. The Cougars did secure the No. 4 seed in the West and will host a 1st round playoff game for the 1st time since 2001. Barton will host to Neosho County Wednesday night at 7 pm at the Barton County Gym.
  • 2nd half pushes Dodge by Cougars; Barton clinging to home playoff spot

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team saw Dodge City hit high gear in the 2nd half Wednesday night at the Civic Center in Dodge City. That resulted in the Conquistadors storming from behind to pick up big Jayhawk West win, 85-76. Dodge City scored 59 2nd half points to turn a Barton halftime lead into the win. Barton is still holding the final home playoff spot in the Jayhawk West with one game to go. Barton is now 9-6 in the West and 19-10 overall. Dodge City moves to 11-4 and 24-5. Barton will travel to West champion Seward County to wrap up the regular season Saturday.
  • Barton moves closer to home playoff game with win over Cloud

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team moved closer to hosting a home playoff with a win over Cloud County Saturday night at the Barton County Gym. The Cougars rolled to a 60-47 win over Cloud to stay in a tie for 4th place in the West. The Cougars improved to 9-5 in West play and 19-9 overall. Cloud County fell to 14-15 overall and 5-10 in the West. The Cougars contest was the final home game for Barton, who will conclude with road games at Dodge City and Seward County.

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team stopped a 2-game losing streak for the 4th time this season at 2. Barton, which has lost only 9 games this season, has dropped 8 of those in 4 2-game losing skids. All of those have ended at 2. The latest was no different as the Cougars rolled to a 74-63 win over Butler County Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym. The win kept the Cougars in contention for a home playoff contest as Barton moved to 8-5 in the West and 18-9 overall. Butler falls to 12-15 and 3-10. Cloud County closes out the home portion of the regular season for Barton Saturday when the Thunderbirds visit the Barton County Gym.
  • Barton drops 2nd straight West contest; loses to Hutch 52-50

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has been viewing the Jayhawk West from the top half of the conference nearly all season long. That view may change if the Cougars don’t find their winning formula again quickly. Barton lost for the 2nd straight time Saturday night, losing at home to Hutchinson, 52-50. Barton had beaten Hutch by 15 points in Hutchinson earlier this year. The loss drops the Cougars out of 4-way tie for 2nd place in the West. Barton is now 7-5 in the West and 17-9 overall. Hutch remains in a 2nd place tie with an 8-4 West mark and is 21-4 overall. Barton will host Butler Wednesday at 5:30 pm as it tries to right the ship.
  • Barton earns home West win over Garden; remains in 2nd

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has its sights set on a home basketball contest to start the Region VI tournament. In order to that, the Cougars must protect their home floor the rest of the West and schedule and try and steal a road win or two. Barton started that quest with a 68-56 home win over Garden City Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym. The win moves Barton to 7-3 in West play, alone in 2nd place. The Cougars are now 17-7 overall this season. Garden falls to 1-8 in West action and 12-11 overall. The Cougars are off Saturday night and will return to action Wednesday when they travel to Colby for a 6 pm tip.
  • Cougars avenge earlier loss; win 74-68 at Pratt

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team showed it is growing up Saturday night by pulling out a hard-fought, come-from-behind 74-68 road win at Pratt. The Cougars trailed most the contest at the Beaver Dome and struggled from the free throw line nearly the entire night before turning things around in the game’s final minutes to earn the win. The win over Pratt not only avenged an earlier season loss at home for the Cougars, it kept Barton in 2nd place in the Jayhawk West at 6-3. The Cougars are now 16-7 overall. That is the highest win total for the Cougars since a 21-win effort in 2000-01. Pratt fell to 3-6 in the West with the loss and 16-7 overall.
  • Cougars upset bid of No. 5 Seward comes up short

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team had defeated a ranked opponent in each of the last 2 weeks. For a while Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym it looked as if the Cougars might beat their highest ranked foe to date. But it wasn’t to be as No. 5 Seward County rallied from a 10-point 2nd half deficit to defeat the Cougars, 65-62. With the loss, Barton missed out on a share of the Jayhawk West lead, falling to 5-3 in the West and 15-7 overall. Seward County improves to 21-1 overall and a league-leading 7-1 in the West.
  • Barton stumbles at Cloud; host Seward for West’s top spot Wednesday

    It was one of those games for the Barton County Community College women’s basketball team. One of that contest that is easy to overlook and a mistake to do so. The Cougars entered the contest with Cloud County Saturday in Concordia on a 5-game winning streak and just one win from a 6-1 mark in the West and a battle with 6-1 Seward Wednesday looming for the top spot in the West. Cloud was just 1-5 in conference play. But the Cougars only lead of the game was 5-3 and it lasted just 10 seconds. Cloud County dominated most of the game then held on for a 61-56 win over Barton in Arley Bryant Gym. The loss dropped Barton to 5-2 in the West and 15-6 overall. Cloud is now 2-5 and 11-10. Barton will still battle Seward for a share of the lead Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym.
  • Cougars clip another ranked foe in West play

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team just keeps whittling down the field of one loss teams in the Jayhawk West. For the 3rd time in 4 games, the Cougars handed a team its 2nd loss in West play with a 74-57 win over No. 17 Dodge City at the Barton County Gym Wednesday night. It was also the 2nd straight game the Cougars knocked off the No. 17 ranked team as Barton turned the trick against last week’s No. 17 team Hutchinson Saturday on the road. The win moves Barton to 5-1 in the West and 15-5 overall. Dodge City is now 17-3 overall and 4-2 in the West. Seward and Barton are now the only 1-loss team left in the West.
  • Barton wins at No. 17 Hutch; keeps pace with West frontrunners

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team is definitely making some noise in the Jayhawk West Conference. Loud enough noise that folks around the conference are no doubt hearing at this point. The latest of those noises came when the Cougars moved to a perfect 3-0 on the road in the conference with a win at No. 17 Hutchinson Saturday night. The Cougars led from the opening minutes and never trailed as they rolled to a 64-49 win over the ranked Blue Dragons on the Sports Arena floor. Barton moves to 14-5 overall and 4-1 in the West while Hutch falls to 16-2 and 4-2. The Cougars continue their battles with the top clubs in the conference as No. 7 Dodge City visits the Barton County Gym Wednesday.
  • Barton women climb near top of West standings with road win at Butler

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team is showing it can be road tough in Jayhawk West play. For the 2nd time in as many tries, the Cougars earned a road win in the conference, notching a 58-52 victory over Butler County in El Dorado. The Cougars led nearly the entire contest on their way to their 3rd straight Jayhawk West win and a tie at the top of the conference in the loss column as Barton improved to 3-1 in the West and 13-5 overall. Butler fell to 10-8 and 1-3. The Cougars will be on the road again Saturday – 5 of the 1st 8 West game are on the road – when they travel to Hutchinson to take on the Blue Dragons at the Sports Arena.
  • Barton women hand Colby 2nd loss of the season

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has made its living playing great defense. The Colby Trojans bolted to a 15-1 start with great shooting. When the two collided Wednesday night at the Barton County Gym it was the Cougar defense which got the best of the Trojan offense. Barton frustrated the Trojans offensive attack for a 64-56 Jayhawk West win. The win improved Barton to 2-1 in the West and 12-5 overall while Colby fell to 2-1 and 15-2. The Cougars have a week off before heading to Butler County.
  • Cougars win West road opener to even conference mark at 1-1

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team tasted victory for the 1st time in Jayhawk West play Saturday with a road win at Garden City. The Cougars did just enough down the stretch this time to snag the 54-53 win from the Broncbusters. The win was the 1st conference win for 1st year head coach Lane Lord. Barton is now 11-5 overall as is Garden City, who fell to 0-2 in West play. Barton will take on Colby Wednesday at 5:30 in the Barton County Gym, going for back-to-back conference wins.
  • Barton drops West opener to streaking Beavers

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team knew it would have its hands full Thursday night in the Jayhawk West opener against Pratt, who came into the contest riding an 11-game winning streak and a 13-1 mark. They were right. The Cougars and Beavers battled back and forth during the contest before Pratt finally made the plays late to grab a 74-69 win to start West action. Barton is now 10-5 overall and 0-1 in the West while Pratt is 14-1 and 1-0. Barton will travel to Garden City Saturday for the 1st road West action of the season.
  • Barton takes 4-game winning streak to break with wins at Liberal

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team is headed to the Christmas Break on the right note after sweeping a pair of teams in the Pizza Hut Classic hosted by Seward County in Liberal this past weekend. Barton knocked off State Fair (Mo.) Friday afternoon and took care of Northeastern (Colo.) Saturday afternoon to run its winning streak to 4 games as it ready for conference play on Jan. 5. The Cougars defeated State Fair by an 87-52 score Friday then rolled by Northeastern 66-45 Saturday. Barton, now 10-4, will open Jayhawk West action against Pratt, who enters the break with a 13-1 mark.
  • Cougars sweep East foes in Jayhawk Shoot Out

    After a start that has seen 5 ranked foes in the opening 10 games, the Barton County Community College women’s basketball team was ready for a couple of games that ended in 20-point wins. The Cougars got just that this past weekend with a wins over Kansas City Kansas and Neosho County during the annual Jayhawk Shoot Out in Coffeyville. Barton rolled to a 73-46 win over KCK on the opening night of the Shoot Out then turned around and defeated Neosho County 77-49 during the morning hours of the event’s final day. The wins ended a 2-game skid for Barton and ran the Cougars mark to 8-4 for the season. Barton still has two pre-conference games slated this weekend when the Cougars take on State Fair (Mo.) and Northeastern Junior College (Colo) at the Pizza Hut Classic in Liberal.
  • Barton continues 2nd half struggles in losses at Coffeyville

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team may be ranked in the Top 10 if their contests were to end at halftime. But 2nd half struggles are starting to become a theme Coach Lane Lord and the Cougars would like to get rid of. The 2nd half woes continued in Coffeyville this past weekend as Barton blew double digits halftime leads twice, losing to host Coffeyville, 77-73 in overtime, and No. 24 ranked Eastern Oklahoma, 72-67, during the Thanksgiving Classic. Barton is now 6-4 for the season and will return to Coffeyville this weekend for the Jayhawk Shoot-Out where the Cougars will play KCK and Neosho.
  • Cougars roll through Colby Ambassador Classic with 3-0 mark

    The Barton County Community College women’s basketball team has seem to recover just fine from a difficult night last week. After losing a 16-point lead, the game and their starting point guard last Tuesday, the Cougars rebounded to post a 3-0 mark over the weekend in Colby at the Ambassador Classic. Barton rolled to wins over the Bethany JV (87-45) and Independence (67-45), and then held off Miles (Mont) for a 60-53 win on the final day to post a perfect 3-0 mark and improve to 6-2 on the season. Colby was also perfect at the event. Barton will continue its road trek this weekend when it travels to Coffeyville to battle two more heavyweights in the Coffeyville Classic.
  • Tough night for Barton women’s basketball team

    It was not a good night for the Barton County Community College women’s basketball team Tuesday night at the Barton County Gym. The night saw the Cougars blow a 16-point 2nd half lead as well as lose their starting point guard for at least a month. Barton County fell to 3-2 on the season with a 59-53 setback to perennial Jayhawk East power Cowley County. Cowley is now 6-0 for the season. The Cougars will try to return to their winning ways Thursday as they start play in the Colby Ambassador Classic.
  • Barton goes 1-1 in Pepsi Classic to start season 3-1 against tough foes

    When 1st-year Barton County Community College women’s coach Lane Lord saw his schedule to start his inaugural season he saw four ranked team in the 1st four games. So when the Pepsi Classic came to a close at the Barton County Gym Saturday night, Coach Lord was disappointed with a loss to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M but couldn’t be too upset with his team’s 3-1 start. The Cougars fell to No. 17 NEO by a 73-63 score after knocking off No. 18 Moberly Area (Mo) Friday, 62-55. That gave the Cougars a 1-1 mark in the Classic and a 3-1 mark overall to start the season.
  • Cougar women impressive in opening weekend of season

    It was a weekend to remember at the Barton County Community College Gym for a pair of reasons. First was the fact that the Barton County women’s basketball team opened their 2004-05 campaign with a pair of wins over two ranked foes at the Pizza Hut Classic. Second, it marked career collegiate coaching wins No. 1 and 2 for new Cougar coach Lane Lord. The Cougars defeated No. 16 Iowa Western the opening night by an 83-78 score then came back with an easy win over Division II No. 9 Des Moines Area (Iowa), 74-54.
  • Ewalefo brings NCAA Tourney experience to Cougars
    June 21, 2004
    Vivian Ewalefo will bring the experience of the NCAA Women’s basketball tournament last season to the Barton County Community College women’s basketball team next season. She was a member of the Liberty University basketball team which lost to Georgia in the opening round of the tournament. Ewalefo, a 6-0 forward, will be a sophomore for the Cougars and new coach Lane Lord next season.
