Barton women's basketball releases list of signees

Barton County women's basketball coach Don Kayser released a list of six signees for the 2001-02 basketball season.

Two players are from Kansas, one from Texas and the other three are from various parts of the world. Those six comprise a recruiting class Coach Kayser is excited about.

"I am really happy with the class," Coach Kayser said. "We have some really good players that should step into some good roles for us."

The Kansas duo includes a pair of Class 1A stars in Macksville's Michelle Deighton and Bucklin's Leslie Ann Minnis. Deighton, a 5-8 guard, scored 14 points a game for Macksville High School last year. Minnis, a 6-2 center, will bring a 17-point, 9-rebound average with her following her senior season at Bucklin High School.

Also coming in to play in the post for the Cougars will be 6-2 Tatjana Kiseljova, who heads to Barton County from Astonia. Kiseljova played in an advanced league where she averaged 15 points and seven rebounds a contest. Katharina Vargas will also come to Barton from Europe. The 5-10 forward from Germany scored just shy of 30 points a game for her club team last season.

The remaining two recruits are guards for Coach Kayser. Laura Irvine, a 5-8 guard from Canada, scored 25 points a game for St. Roberts CHS last season. The lone sophomore recruit for the Cougars is Sarah Kendrick, who transferred in from the University of Texas-San Antonio. During her senior season in high school in the San Antonio area, Kendrick averaged 24 points a contest.

Coach Kayser said he is probably done recruiting but still might add a couple of new players to go along with the six recruits and seven returning players.
