Barton throwers nearly set program records at Triton Kansas Challenge.
A pair of throwers nearly broke program records Sunday as the Barton Community College track and field program competed in the Triton Kansas Challenge held at Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center.
The limited squad of Cougars set seven personal best efforts with none coming larger than what transpired in the shot put.
On the women's side, Ana da Silva moved her name up the program chart into the second spot, marking a nation leading 16.10m (52-10.00) on her third attempt to come just seven inches from the school record.
For the Cougar men is was the performance of Fred Moudani, steadily improving on his first four attempts to nail an 18.08m (59-4.00) mark in falling a foot short of the record in the nation's second best throw this season.
Barton took the top two spots in both genders of the shot put, with Jada Sewell's personal best moving up to the nation's third slot of the women's season with a heave of 13.03m (42-9.00) and Giovanni Gutierrez also eclipsing his personal best on the men's side with a nation's seventh best mark of 15.84m (51-11.75).
The Cougars were also successful in the weight throw, led by the Cougar men's Fabio Hessling and Moudani going 1-2 in the event. Hessling, who is the nation's third ranked thrower, won the event with a 16.59m (54-5) throw with Moudani eclipsing his best effort for the second time of the day with a nation's best throw of 16.30m (53-5). Gutierrez also hit a personal best with a 15.07m (49-5) mark to place fifth, with the nation's twelfth ranked Tyler Nelson in sixth place at 14.74m (48-4) and Jeremiah Atkeson taking seventh at 13.15m (43-1)
Silva and Sewell placed second and fourth on the women's side with the nation's third ranked Da Silva marking a 16.61m (54-6) mark and Sewell marking a 11.32m (37-1).
Glenith Calvin III was the lone Barton jumper to make the trip, competing in the triple jump for the first time in taking fourth place overall at 13.51m (44-4.00) and placing eighth in the long jump at 6.17m (20-3.00).
Post-season is on the horizon for the program as the Cougars return to Pittsburg later this week competing in the KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships held February 20-21.
