Christian Lyon and Latavia Maines of the nationally ranked Barton Community College track and field teams earned the program's ninth weekly conference award this season as the duo were this week's KJCCC Kansas MTXE Outdoor Track Athletes of the Week.

Lyon grabbed national attention this past weekend in winning the 100m in 10.00 seconds in front of over 20,000 spectators at the Home Depot Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas. The time was wind-aided but didn't diminish the fact of beating out some of the nation's fastest runners for the title including the top-three on the NCAA Division I Descending Order List. The accomplishment earned a national award as well in being named the NJCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A sophomore from Fort Carson, Colorado, Lyon became the first Cougar since Ronnie Lloyd's title in 1990 and the first junior college athlete since 1992 to win the university division of the meet.

Lyon's time also inked the storied Barton program's third best 100m time to rank behind Erick Wilson's 9.93 (2003) and Steve Mullings' 9.96 (2004).

Maines is another rising star on Barton track and field roster as the Centralia, Illinois, freshman's progression from the indoor season resulted in a second place 15.22m debut mark in the shot put at the Texas Relays. Ranking the fifth best throw ever in school history, Maines also has the top mark to date in the NJCAA outdoor season.

The duo's next action to shine will be this weekend as the Cougar squads will compete at two sites, the West Texas A&M Classic and Multis in Canyon, Texas, on Friday and the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The nine total awards for the Cougars included the indoor honors of the Lady Cougars' Amanda Carty, Keosha Sanders, and Latoya Stewart's two awards, to go along with, the Cougars' Bradley Fleurinord, Dartez Hamlin, and Kevin Nedrick.
