The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team opened up conference play Tuesday in Liberal with a 6-3 win over 7th ranked Seward County Community College.
The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead from doubles action before taking four wins in singles action to pick up the victory.
Improving to 8-2 on the season, Barton will next host 12th ranked Pratt Community College on Monday in a 1:00 p.m. first serve conference dual at Veterans' Memorial Park.
Barton benefitted by the Saints down two players, Barton earning the No. 3 doubles default win for Gustavo Campos and Marno Du Plessis while also gaining victories at the No. 5 and 6 singles for Tsholofelo Tsiang and Du Plessis.
Barnabas Kalaba was 2-0 in on-court action, teaming with Tsiang in the No. 2 doubles to win 8-6 over Antoine Adamiak and Richard Patte before the 41st ranked Cougar came out on top 6-4, 6-4 against Patte at the No. 4 singles.
Joining Kalaba with on-court wins in singles play, Fernando Andre won the first set 6-3 before needing a 7-3 tiebreak to win the No. 3 matchup against Adamiak.
Andre and No. 1 doubles partner Sebastiao Vilas dropped an 8-6 decision to Filipe Krohn Silva and Seb Holden with Vilas withdrawing in the first set of the No. 2 against 37th ranked Holden.
In the No. 1 singles matchup, the Saints' Silva won 6-2, 6-2 over 22nd ranked Campos.
