Barton’s Camara named 2nd Team NJCAA All-American; Thirteenth in Barton history

Leaving a mark as one of the most prolific soccer scorers in Barton history, Barton Community College’s Soriba “Ebu” Camara joins a distinguished NJCAA Division I All-American list being named to the nation’s 2nd Team. Helping lead the Barton Community College men’s soccer team to back-to-back conference championships, the sophomore from Hays, Kansas, becomes the thirteenth Cougar to earn All-American status. Kevin Ellis and Craig Ratanamorn earned All-American status twice, bringing Barton’s total to fifteen in thirteen years of competition.

Eight Cougars named to All-Conference team; Seven earn All-Region

Eight members of the Barton Community College men’s soccer team were recently selected to the 2013 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Conference team with seven landing on the All-Region VI team. The Cougars placed six on the conference first team with two additional players landing on the second team, while four landed on the region first team with three on the second. The eight selections follow an 11-5-1 season under first-year Head Coach Kewley, as the Cougars won their second straight conference championship sharing the honor with Coffeyville Community College. Both Barton and Coffeyville’s seasons came to an abrupt end getting upset in the Region VI semifinals. The championship crown was also the eighth title in twelve years the Cougars were eligible for the title.

Cougars upset in Region VI semifinals

The Barton Community College men’s soccer team joined fellow co-conference champion Coffeyville Community College as an upset victim in the Region VI semifinals Thursday at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex. The Cougars gave up two first half while missing many opportunities as Cloud County Community College upset Barton 2-0. The loss ends Barton’s season at 11-5-1 while Cloud County improves to 12-8-0 and advances to Friday’s championship contest against Johnson County Community College.

Vargas becomes 6-time weekly conference award winner

Barton Community College men’s soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week. Vargas and his Cougar defense earned the award for the sixth time this season and tenth overall in Vargas’ two year career. Vargas made numerous solid saves in preserving the No. 20 Cougars 2-1 win over Neosho County Community College to advance to the Region VI semifinals. Vargas’ task, much like Neosho’s goalkeeper in the first half, was made exceptionally difficult in the second half fighting against a sustained 45mph wind and the region playoff pressure to secure the win.

No. 20 Cougars survive and advance to Region VI semifinals

Normally a two goal lead would feel relatively safe but thanks to a 45mph wind Sunday at the Cougar Soccer/Track Complex, the No. 20 Barton Community College men’s soccer held on for a 2-1 win over Neosho County Community College in first round play of the Region VI playoffs. Crowned co-champions of the Jayhawk Conference last week, the region’s second seeded Cougars improved to 11-4-1 on the season and advance to Thursday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal game at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex against the 11-8-0 Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds. Top seeded Coffeyville Community College will play the 4:00 p.m. semifinal against 12-6-0 Johnson County Community College with the championship game slated at 12:00 p.m. Friday.

Comeback falls short as Pratt upsets No. 20 Barton soccer; Cougars settle for at least a share of Jayhawk crown

Facing a three goal first half deficit, the Barton Community College men’s soccer comeback fell short Saturday losing 3-2 to Pratt Community College. Playing the final regular season game at the Cougar Soccer Complex, the No. 20 ranked Cougars failed on its bid to win the Jayahwk Conference crown outright in dropping to 8-2-0 and 10-4-1 overall. Pratt, who needed the win just for the opportunity to make the region playoffs, improves its chances in moving to 3-6-0 in conference play and 4-9-0 overall. Despite the loss Barton still claims at least a share of the conference crown, the program’s second straight and eighth overall. The Cougars still have a chance to win the title outright but must wait until October 27 when co-leader Coffeyville Community College wraps up season play at Dodge City Community College.

Camara’s two goals help lift No. 20 Cougars to 3-1 win over Northern Oklahoma; Control conference destiny on Saturday

The No. 20 ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team placed two on the board in first half action to win 3-1 Wednesday over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The Cougars improve to 10-3-1 on the season while dropping NOC to 7-8-0. With only one regular season conference game remaining, Barton controls its destiny for at least a share of the Jayhawk Conference crown. The 8-1-0 Cougars will be scoreboard watching on Thursday as fellow top spotter Coffeyville Community College travels to Johnson County Community College. A loss by the No. 15 Red Ravens followed by a Barton win against 3-10-1 Pratt Community College on Saturday would give the Cougars the outright title. Kickoff for Saturday’s game at the Cougar Soccer Complex is 4:00 pm. or fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the No. 18 ranked Lady Cougar’s game should it run long.

Barton’s Vargas selected for third straight conference weekly award, fifth of season

For the third straight week and fifth time this season, Barton Community College men’s soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week. Vargas and his Cougar defense earned the award for the fifth time this season. The honor marks the second consecutive week Vargas and the Cougar defense have been selected for the achievement. Vargas saved eleven shots on goal last week with only two goals against, both coming via the penalty kick. His continued solid play in goal has helped the No. 20 nationally ranked Cougars rebound from an early conference loss to climb back up to a first place tie at 8-1-0 and improve to 9-3-1 overall .

Cougars knock off national receiving votes Cavaliers 3-1; Camara ties fourth best career mark

Staying atop the Jayhawk Conference standings, the Barton Community College men’s soccer team knocked off Johnson County Community College 3-1 Saturday in Overland Park, Kansas. The Cougars built a 3-0 lead only to surrender a late penalty kick goal in winning their seventh straight against the Cavaliers. Barton remains on top of the conference standings at 8-1-0 and improve to 9-3-1 while Johnson County slips to 5-3-0 in conference and 9-5-0 overall. Barton will step away from conference play on Wednesday for the first of two remaining home games as Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa comes to the Cougar Soccer Complex for a 4:00 p.m. matchup. The Cougars’ final regular season home contest will come four days later on Saturday against Pratt Community College.

Vargas awarded conference goalkeeper of the week for second consecutive week

For the fourth time this season Barton Community College men’s soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week. The honor marks the second consecutive week Vargas and the Cougar defense has been selected for the achievement. Despite the Cougars losing two games last weekend in Dallas, Texas, to two highly nationally ranked teams, Vargas had tremendous effort in goal. Facing thirty-five shots on goal Vargas saved eighty-six percent of the scoring attempts. Against No. 3 Tyler Junior College, Vargas made an astounding twenty-five saves in a ninety-ninth minute extra time 1-0 loss.

Cougars escape with overtime thriller over Independence

Playing its second extra time game in three days, the Barton Community College men’s soccer team got a game-winning goal from a defenseman as the Cougars escaped 2-1 over Independence Community College. Falling out of the NJCAA polls after a pair of losses to nationally ranked teams including Sunday’s 1-0 overtime loss to No. 3 Tyler Junior College, the Cougars came from behind to avoid the Pirates’ upset bid. With the win Barton improves to 7-1-0 in conference and 8-3-1 overall while sinking the Pirates to 0-6-1 in conference and 1-9-2 overall. The Cougars will next play nationally receiving votes Johnson County Community College in a pivotal conference battle at 3:30 p.m. in Overland Park.

No. 18 Cougars on short end of 1-0 overtime dual with No. 3 Tyler

The No. 18 ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team lost its second game at the Richland Classic in Dallas, Texas, falling in a tough 1-0 extra time battle Sunday to No. 3 Tyler Junior College. The Cougars will return to conference play this upcoming Tuesday against Independence Community College. Kick-off set for 4:00 p.m. at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Cougars shutout by nationally ranked Richland

The No. 18 ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team lost 4-0 to host and Division III No. 9 ranked Richland College Friday evening in Dallas, Texas. Richland, who defeated No. 1 Tyler Junior College a week prior, scored a pair of goals in each half to drop Barton to 7-2-1 on the season. After taking Saturday off, the Cougars return to the pitch in the Richland Classic for a 12:00 p.m. game against Tyler Junior College.

Vargas named men’s soccer KJCCC goalkeeper of the week for third time this season

Barton Community College men’s soccer goalkeeper Mauricio Vargas has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this season. Vargas saved four shots on goal in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Neosho County Community College, bringing his season total to 48 and an eighty-seven save percentage. Neosho’s lone goal came on a one-on-one situation set up by a stellar half-volley from Diego Benitez to David Bustos who beat Vargas on the far post in early second half action.

Cougars maul Panthers for three first half goals for 4-1 victory

Returning from a week away from competition, the Barton Community College men’s soccer team returned to the pitch Sunday scoring three first half goals enroute to a 4-1 victory over Neosho County Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex. The victory keeps the Cougars tied for first place in the conference at 6-1-0 while improving to 7-1-1 on the season. Neosho County drops to 1-3-1 in conference play and 7-3-1 on the season. Barton will step out of conference play this weekend as the Cougars travel to Dallas, Texas, for two matches against nationally ranked teams before returning home for an October 8 conference game against Independence Community College.

Camara earns awards, becomes second straight Barton men’s soccer player honored

For the second straight week, the Barton Community College men’s soccer team earned both the KJCCC Verizon Wireless and NJCAA weekly awards. Ebu Camara, who won this week’s player of the week award, joins last week’s goalkeeper of the week Mauricio Vargas as Barton has won three out the conference season’s five weekly awards. The nationally receiving votes Cougars stand at 5-1-0 in conference play and 6-1-1 overall as they await Sunday’s 4:00 p.m. conference game against Neosho County Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
