20th ranked Cougar golf places fourth at second conference meet of season; Nordstrom finishes top ten #GoBarton

The 20th ranked Barton Community College men's golf team placed fourth Tuesday in the Jayhawk Tournament No. 2 of the season held at Wichita's Crestview Country Club Golf Course.

Barton and the seven additional conference member field tore up the south course in Monday's 36-holes of ideal weather condition action, the Cougars shooting a spring season best 293 in both rounds for a combined 18-over but was well behind the big three of the Jayhawk as each posted sub-par rounds. For Tuesday's final round of eighteen holes, Mother Nature huffed 25-35mph wind speeds with gusts reaching near 50mph in seeing Barton slip on the scorecard to 315 but held steady on its fourth place standing.

Hutchinson Community College surged to the meet title, down four into the final round but the 3rd ranked Blue Dragons carded a 3-over in leaping to the top with an 11-under 841. Second round leader 11th ranked Dodge City Community College slipped to second place at 1-over 853 while 12th ranked Garden City Community College dropped to the third spot at 3-over 855.

Forty-six strokes back were the Cougars with a three-round total of 49-over 901, twelve shots ahead of fifth place Kansas City Kansas Community College at 61-over 913. Fort Scott Community College, finished in sixth at 116-over 968, followed by Hesston College's 137-over 989 and Coffeyville Community College eight place 292-over 1144.

Barton will rejoin its conference mates again next week at Newton's Sand Creek Station Golf Course for the KJCCC Championships held Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20.

Pontus Nordstrom made the largest Cougar leap up the leaderboard, staying steady with three solid rounds in the changing weather conditions posting twin 1-over 72 cards on Monday before finishing with a final round 3-over 74 to tie for the 9th spot at 5-over 218.

Placing 15th in the forty-nine man field, Carlos Hamou sat in the 12th position after the first day 1-over performance but slipped on Tuesday with a 7-over 78 round for an 8-over 221 total.

Tom Gehring cracked the top-25 of the field with a 24th placing at 16-over 229 carding roller coaster rounds of 76, 72, and 81.

Ethan Bonnett began his tournament with a solid 3-over 74 morning round before a blister added to the challenges resulting in 81 and 82 cards to place tied for 28th at 24-over 237.

Rounding out the Barton team entries, Tom Lehmann place 30th overall at 25-over 238 with rounds of 79, 77, and 82.

Competing as an individual, Marshall Woolf finished in 39th place on Monday rounds of 83 and 80 before a closing 94 to compile a 44-over 257.
