The Barton Community College men's basketball team exploded for twenty-two points in the overtime period Saturday night at the Barton Gym to survive with a 105-92 victory over Colby Community College. The conference opening win keeps Barton unblemished on the early season at 5-0 while handing the Trojans its first loss to drop to 3-1. Next up will be Barton's first road test of the year as the Cougars travel to Garden City Community College on Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. tip at the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex.
Trailing by two with seventeen seconds to play, the Cougars worked the clock getting a back door cut with less than four seconds remaining in what would force the overtime period. Barton scored the first eight points of the extra frame and later strung a 10-0 stretch to run away with the victory in a game of sixteen lead changes and eleven ties.
Six Cougars reached double-digits on the night as reigning conference player of the week Marvin Cannon leading the column with a career high twenty-seven points. Three Cougars put up double-double performances as Kawanise Wilkins reached career highs with twenty-six points and twelve rebounds for the Illinois' freshman's second consecutive double-double night. Point guard Keshon Montague, who scored five points in the opening 1:32 of the overtime period, not only upped his career marks but recorded his first collegiate double-double with nineteen points and distributing twelve dimes on the night. Scoring ten points and grabbing ten rebounds, Elijah Ford recorded his first double while Noah Webster scored eleven coming off the bench. Sam Lorenzen's perfect night from the field closed out the double digit scoring going 4-of-4 including two long range shots for ten points.
Milton Wordlow III led five Colby players in double digits burying 3-of-6 from long range for twenty-two points. James Dalton scored thirteen and fellow starter added eleven. Leading the squad with six rebounds, Drew Young was joined by Craig Beaudion off the bench with ten points each as the Trojans outscored Barton's bench production 32-13 on the night.
Barton's next game will also be against an undefeated team as the Broncbusters picked up a convincing win Saturday in El Dorado knocking off host Butler Community College 75-59 and holding the high scoring Grizzlies to half their season average output.
