  • Cougars receive post-season awards, Walker named MVP
    March 16, 2015
    Three Barton Community College men’s basketball players recently received post-season honors on the All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) West Division with one landing on the All-Region VI Division I team. Sophomore Ahmad Walker headlined the three being named as the Most Valuable Player in both the Jayhawk West and Region VI, as well as, an obvious first team selection on both teams. Sophomores Jalin Barnes and Kenny Enoch also garnered honors being selected honorable mention Jayhawk West. The triplets anchored the Cougars to a 24-7 record and a second place in the rugged Jayhawk West with a 12-4 record. Finishing just outside the final NJCAA Division I poll, Barton spent time in the Top-25 splitting the season series with No. 7 Butler Community College while sweeping No. 23 Hutchinson Community College.

    For the fourth time this season, Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. Recording his tenth and eleventh double-double performance on the season last week, Walker averaged over twenty points and fourteen rebounds for Cougars. Walker shares his fourth time honor with Butler Community College’s Chris Howell, who also recorded a twenty-one point fourteen rebound performance in the Grizzlies lone game last week.
  • Cougars’ season comes to crashing end, Cloud County pulls off the upset 84-81

    It was the matchup the Barton Community College men’s basketball team didn’t want to see in the opening round of the Region VI playoffs but it was the hand dealt by the scheduling gods. Having defeated Cloud County Community College by nine on Wednesday, the Cougars were faced again with having to defeat the Thunderbirds as the season stood in the balance. Barton took a nine point lead into the locker room but a Cloud County 11-2 run in the first three moments changed momentum eventually leading to the Cougars season coming to a halt 84-81. Finishing the regular season receiving votes in the national poll, Barton concludes the 2014-15 campaign at 24-7 after a 12-4 second place finish in the Jayhawk West standings. Cloud County, who finished last in the West at 3-13, improves to 17-14 earning a Region VI quarterfinal match against eleventh seeded Dodge City Community College at 1:00 p.m. Thursday.
  • Enoch’s record performance powers Cougars to 78-69 win over Cloud County

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team closed out the regular season Wednesday night at the Barton Gym with a 78-69 victory over Cloud County Community College. Avenging a last second loss in Concordia back in January, Barton erased a three-point second half deficit with a 12-2 run midway through the half and never allowed the Thunderbirds closer than five points the rest of the way. Finishing second in the Jayhawk West at 14-4, the nationally receiving votes Cougar team improved to 24-6 overall while dropping Cloud County to 3-13 in West play and 16-14 overall. In a stroke of oddity regarding the seeding for the upcoming Region VI tournament, the two teams will battle again in a rubber match this Saturday as the Cougars will again play host to the Thunderbirds in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. with free admission to the public.

    Title hopes dashed as No. 21 Cougars lose at hot shooting Pratt Needing a win to keep its slim hope of sharing a Jayhawk West title, the No. 21 Barton Community College men's basketball team couldn't take care of their part Saturday night at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena getting blown out at Pratt Community College. Barton led by two at halftime but a 13-4 run including eleven straight by the Beavers to open the second frame was a preview of things to come as Pratt would score fifty-two second half points. Barton cut it to two with 13:30 to play but the hot shooting Beavers went on a 13-2 run to stretch the lead to double digits and never looked back connecting on 9-of-11 beyond the arc in the game’s final twenty-minutes. Having already locked up the West's second seed for the upcoming Region VI Tournament, Barton sees its win streak stopped at five dropping to 11-4 in conference play and 23-6 overall while Pratt improves to 8-7 and 17-12 on the season. Barton will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday as the Cougars host Cloud County Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.
  • No. 21 Cougars escape with 75-73 win over Colby

    Moving into the national polls earlier in the day at No. 21, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team survived Colby Community College upset bid Wednesday night at the Barton Gym 75-73. With twenty lead changes throughout the night, the Cougars grabbed the final lead with five minutes remaining to hold on for the victory. Still in the hunt for a Jayhawk West title just a half game behind No. 8 Butler Community College, Barton locked up at least the second spot in the West at 11-3 and 23-5 overall while dropping Colby 3-12 and 12-17 overall. The Cougars begin the first of only two remaining regular season games this Saturday at Pratt Community College before concluding next Wednesday hosting Cloud County Community College. Saturday’s tip-off time at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena is slated for 8:00 p.m.
  • Barton’s Walker named KJCCC Player of the Week for second straight week

    For the second straight week and third time this season, Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week for his performances last week. After shooting over 56% from the field the previous week, Walker had an even better week shooting 61.5% from the field including 66.7% from beyond the arc and 80% from the charity stripe. Setting a new career high with thirty-two points in Barton’s two-point win versus Dodge City, Walker’s twenty-four point week average increased his Jayhawk West leading average to 20.5 points per contest. Scoring sixteen points and eleven rebounds last Saturday in Barton’s five-point win at Garden City, Walker recorded his fourth double-double in the last eight games finishing the week averaging 9.5 rebounds and three assists per game.
  • Barton men sweep nationally ranked Hutchinson with 86-73 win at the Sports Arena

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team led virtually wire-to-wire Wednesday night at the Sports Arena knocking off No. 21 Hutchinson Community College 86-73. Trailing 1-0 two minutes into the contest, the Cougars turned the tides building a twenty-point first half lead going on to sweep the season series and win for the second straight year in the Sports Arena. Barton remains in the hunt for a Jayhawk West title just a half game behind Butler Community College while solidifying its hold on second place at 10-3 and 22-5 overall and dropping the Blue Dragons into a third place tie at 7-5 and 20-6 overall. Winning four straight within its tough four-game seven-day stretch, the Cougars will get a much needed week’s rest before hosting Colby Community College at 7:30 p.m. on Homecoming festivity night taking place on Wednesday, February 18.
  • Barton men knock off No. 6 Butler 86-78

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team knocked off No. 6 Butler Community College 86-78 Monday night at the Barton Gym. Having lost to the Grizzlies by two in El Dorado earlier this season, the Cougars built a sixteen point second half lead then held off a late rally for the win. The victory moves the Cougars one game behind the Grizzlies improving to 9-3 in the Jayhawk West and 21-5 on the season while dropping Butler to 9-2 and 23-2 overall. Barton will wrap up its current three-game five-day stretch with another big conference matchup on Wednesday as the Cougars travel to No. 17 ranked Hutchinson Community College. Looking for revenge on the Cougars from the 105-90 defeat at the Barton Gym, Hutchinson (7-4, 20-5) trails Barton in the conference standings and is coming off a 76-71 overtime loss at Butler Saturday night. Tip-off time in the Hutchinson Sports Arena set for 7:30 p.m.

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team picked up a big Jayhawk Conference road win Saturday night defeating Garden City Community College 73-68 at the Perryman Athletic Conference. The win moved the Cougars into sole possession of second place in the West standings at 8-3 and 20-5 overall while dropping the Broncbusters to 3-8 and 14-11. Getting the first of three games in five days under their belt, Barton prepares for a big showdown at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Barton Gym with No. 6 ranked and conference leader Butler Community College (9-1, 23-1). The Cougars’ eighteen point second half deficit rally fell short earlier in the conference season as the Grizzlies held on to win 73-71 in El Dorado. Barton will then conclude the tough stretch in the schedule with a Wednesday road trip to third place and No. 17 ranked Hutchinson Community College.

    For the second time this season, Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week for his performances last week. Despite two road conference losses by the then-No. 25 ranked Cougars, Walker tied his career high thirty points in a last second loss at Cloud County then three days later recorded his seventh double-double of the season in Saturday’s loss at Seward County. Held scoreless during Saturday’s first half action, the Jayhawk West’s leading scorer put up twenty-four points and grabbed twelve rebounds while also dishing out seven assists. For the week Walker shot over 56% from the field averaging twenty-seven points and nine rebounds to go along with over six assists per game.
  • Cougars’ late rally avoids upset, Barton escapes with 80-78 win over Dodge City

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team rallied from a late eight point deficit Wednesday night at the Barton Gym to escape 80-78 over Dodge City Community College. Having defeated the Conquistadors by thirty-one points in Dodge City in the second game of the conference season, Barton knocked down the big shots while getting some help escaping Dodge City’s upset bid. The victory kept Barton in second place in the Jayhawk West as the Cougars snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 7-3 and 19-5 on the season while Dodge City suffers its fourth straight defeat in dropping to 4-6 in conference and 14-10 overall. Barton will begin a tough three-game five-day stretch beginning on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. at Garden City Community College. The Cougars will then return home Monday for a battle with No. 6 Butler Community College before wrapping up the stretch with a Wednesday trip to No. 17 Hutchinson Community College.

    The high scoring Barton Community College men’s basketball team were beat at their own game for the second straight game, taking an 89-76 whooping to Seward County Community College Saturday night at the Greenhouse in Liberal. Averaging a Region VI best 93.4 points per game and second in field goal percentage at over 50%, the No. 25 ranked Cougars went cold shooting a season low 40% from the field while allowing its opponent to shoot over 50% for the second straight game. The second straight loss and game away from the Barton Gym drops the Cougars into a second place tie in the Jayhawk West standings at 6-3 and 18-5 overall while Seward County improves to 4-5 and 11-11. Next up for the Cougars will be Dodge City Community College on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.
  • Last second shot knocks off No. 25 Cougars, Barton men fall 95-94 at Cloud County

    Less than one second stood between the Barton Community College men’s basketball team winning its fifth straight game but the No. 25 ranked Cougars couldn’t hold on to a four point late lead in falling 95-94 to Cloud County Community College Wednesday night in Concordia. Making their 2015 debut in the national polls one day prior, the Cougars drop to 6-2 in Jayhawk play and 18-4 overall while Cloud County, who has been ranked as high as No. 13 in the national poll before losing six of its next seven, improves to 2-6 in conference and 15-7 overall. Barton will look to regroup as a road trip looms on Saturday as the Cougars travel to Liberal to take on Seward County Community College in an 8:00 p.m. conference battle at the Greenhouse.

    Snapping a seven-game losing streak in Concordia, the Barton Community College women’s basketball team dominated Cloud County Community College most of Wednesday’s contest in winning 73-56. The third straight victory gets the Lady Cougars to .500 on the conference season at 4-4 while improving to 14-6 overall and dropping Cloud County to 1-7 in the Jayhawk and 8-13 overall. Barton will conclude its two-game road stretch with on Saturday as the Lady Cougars travel to No. 6 ranked Seward County Community College for a 6:00 p.m. tip at the Greenhouse.
  • Cougars shake off pesky Beavers for 100-90 win

    Another hot shooting night and balanced scoring led Barton Community College men’s basketball team to its fourth straight victory holding off a pesky Pratt Community College team 100-90 on Hall of Fame night Saturday at the Barton Gym. Shooting over 50% in the first half but finding itself trailing by three at the break, the Cougars took it up a notch shooting nearly 58% in scoring fifty-five second half points. Six Cougars scored eleven or more points as the Jayhawk West’s leading scoring team scored 100 or more for the seventh time on the season and third time in seven conference games. Barton improves to 6-1 in Jayhawk Conference play and 18-3 overall while dropping Pratt to 3-4 and 12-9. Next up for the Cougars will be a trip to Concordia on Wednesday to take on Cloud County Community College in an 8:00 p.m. tip at Bryant Gymnasium.

  • Barton men hang on for 94-86 win at Colby

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team picked up a big road conference win Wednesday night 94-86 at Colby Community College. The Cougars got nineteen first half points from Khalil Gracey to erase an early five point deficit and utilized a late 8-0 run to lead 44-35 at the break. With Colby’s Bruce Watkins knocking down six treys, the Trojans pulled to within four with a minute remaining but a 6-of-8 effort at the charity stripe down the stretch for the Cougars sealed the win. Barton improves to 5-1 in Jayhawk Conference play and 17-3 overall while dropping Colby to 2-5 and 11-10. The Cougars next action will be Hall of Fame night on Saturday at the Barton Gym as Pratt Community College comes to town for a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup.

    Playing without three key players including two starters, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team put forth its best team effort in knocking off No. 12 Hutchinson Community College 105-93 Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. In the 105th meeting between the two rivals, Barton led all but fifty-six seconds of the contest going on to score its highest output ever in the series. The victory improves unranked Barton to 4-1 in the Jayhawk West and 16-3 overall while sending Hutchinson to its third straight loss to drop the Blue Dragons to 1-3 in conference play and 14-4 overall. Concluding a tough five-game nine-day stretch including two games against nationally ranked teams, Barton will get a much needed rest until a January 21 trip to Colby, Kansas, for a 8:00 p.m. conference matchup at the Community Building against Colby Community College.

The Cougars erased an early 3-0 deficit to build a nine-point intermission lead then erupted for fifty-four second half points. Barton improves to 3-1 in conference and 15-3 overall while the defending Jayhawk West champions drops to 2-2 and 9-8 overall. Barton wraps up its five game ten day stretch on Wednesday as No. 6 ranked Hutchinson Community College comes to the Barton Gym for a pivotal 7:30 p.m. conference game.
  • Cougars’ comeback falls short in 73-71 loss at No. 4 Butler

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team’s comeback at the Power Plant fell just short Saturday as the Cougars dropped a 73-71 conference contest to No. 4 ranked Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kansas. Trailing by four at the break, nothing went right for the Cougars to begin second half action as Butler extended the lead out to eighteen in the first six minutes. Barton battled back to take a two point lead with 2:40 to play but the home standing Grizzlies responded with the next five points proving to be the difference down the stretch. The loss drops Barton to 2-1 in conference play and 14-3 overall while Butler remains perfect at 3-0 and 17-0. Barton returns to the Barton Gym for its next two games beginning with Seward County Community College on Monday, a game rescheduled from the January 3rd postponement, and two days later host No. 6 ranked Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday. Tip-off for both conference games scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

    Shaking off a slow start Wednesday at the Barton Gym, the Barton Community College men's basketball team pulled away for an 81-69 conference victory over Garden City Community College. The Cougars improve to 2-0 in Jayhawk play and 14-2 overall while Garden City suffered its third straight loss to open up conference action dropping to 0-3 and 11-6 overall. Barton will have its biggest test of the season traveling to El Dorado on Saturday to take on No. 4 Butler Community College in a 4:00 p.m. tip at the Power Plant.
  • Barton men run away with 105-74 victory at Dodge City to open conference play

    Like their counterparts, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team opened up the conference season impressively, dominating the last thirty minutes of play to win 105-74 at Dodge City Community College. Barton erased a two point deficit midway through first half action but a 10-2 run in a 34-12 spurt put Barton out by twenty 53-33 at the break. After Dodge City closed to within thirteen early in the second half, Barton put the foot down with a 16-2 run to blow the game open at the Civic Center. Barton improves to 13-2 on the season while dropping Dodge City to 10-5. The Cougars will have a day rest before Garden City Community College rolls to town for a 7:30 p.m. tip at the Barton Gym.

    Due to inclement weather and safety concerns, tonight's Barton Community College basketball games versus Seward County Community College at the Barton Gym has been postponed. The games have been rescheduled for Monday, January 12, at the Barton Gym with 5:30 p.m. tip-off for the women and 7:30 p.m. tip-off for the men.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball picked up a pair of wins this weekend in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to close out the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule. The Cougars opened the Kalamazoo Christmas Classic Friday evening defeating the host Kalamazoo Valley Community College 83-66 then with a quick turnaround for Saturday’s 1:00 p.m. game blew out Kellogg Community College 94-66. Barton improves to 12-2 heading into conference play slated January 3 as the Cougars host defending Jayhawk Conference champions Seward County Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Barton Gym,
  • Winning streak snapped as Cougars lose 97-93 to No. 14 Brown Mackie

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team had its eight game winning streak snapped Saturday afternoon at the Barton Gym as the Cougars fell to Division II No. 14 ranked Brown Mackie College 97-93. The loss dropped the Cougars to 10-2 on the season while the Lions improved to 10-3. Barton will wrap up the pre-conference schedule with a trip to Michigan with a pair of games next weekend against Division II opponents. The Cougars will open up the Christmas Classic Friday against the host Kalamazoo Valley at 7:30 p.m. then have a quick turnaround with a 1:00 p.m. contest against Kellogg Community College.

    Ahmad Walker of the Barton Community College men's basketball team has been named the KJCCC Player of the Week. The catalyst in Barton’s three victories this past week including two over Region VI foes during the weekend’s Best Western Angus Inn/Booster Club Classic, Walker scored twenty-five or more points in each contest. For the week the sophomore transfer from Stony Brook University averaged twenty-six points, eight rebounds, and just over five assists and two steals per contest while shooting 58.6% from the field. Putting on an all-around show in Tuesday’s victory over McPherson with his twenty-five point, six rebound, seven assist, five steals, and two blocks, the best of Walker would come over the weekend. Walker followed a career high twenty-seven points in Friday’s 87-70 win over Independence with his first double-double as a Cougar scoring twenty-six and grabbing a season high ten rebounds in the Barton’s 80-75 win over Cowley. In Friday’s victory, Walker’s aggressive play lead to a 12-of-14 performance from the charity stripe while also shooting 50% from the field and dishing out four assists. Scoring six straight to awaken the Cougars early in Saturday’s victory over Cowley, Walker connected on 10-of-15 from the field and was a beast on the boards grabbing half of his ten rebounds on the offensive glass. Walker also led the Cougars in assists for the seventh time in eleven games with five dimes and recorded two steals.
  • Cougar men run win streak to eight with pair of weekend victories

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team won two games over the weekend’s Best Western Angus Inn and Cougar Booster Club Classic to run their win streak to eight straight. The Cougars defeated Independence Community College by an impressive 87-70 margin then held off Cowley College on Saturday 80-75 to wrap up the weekend sweep. Barton improved to 10-1 on the season going into next Saturday’s anticipated 3:00 p.m. matchup against Division II powerhouse Brown Mackie College at the Barton Gym. Like the Cougars, Brown Mackie went 2-0 over the weekend with a 90-87 win Friday over Cowley and an 85-80 Saturday victory over Independence.

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team picked up its eighth straight victory Saturday night at the Barton Gym holding off Cowley College 80-75 to wrap up the weekend’s Best Western Angus Inn and Cougar Booster Club Classic. Having led most of the game but suddenly finding itself in a seven point hole with ten minutes to play, the Cougars went on a 12-0 run in a four minute stretch to recapture the lead for the final eight minutes of the contest. Barton improves to 10-1 on the season while Cowley slips to a deceiving 1-7 mark on the early season. Barton will have nearly a week away from competition before hosting Division II powerhouse Brown Mackie College at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
  • Cougars strike quick to pull away for 87-70 over Independence

    The Barton Community College men's basketball team pulled away in the final ten minutes Friday to win 87-70 over Region VI foe Independence Community College in the Best Western Angus Inn and Cougar Booster Club Classic. Leading the game’s last twenty-eight minutes, a pair of stretches in the final quarter of the game accumulating for a 16-1 advantage in a matter of three minutes was the big difference in the win. The Cougars improve to 9-1 on the season while Independence slips to 3-6. Barton will wrap up the Thanksgiving Classic at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night taking on Cowley College, a 90-87 loser to Division II powerhouse Brown Mackie College.
