  • Three Cougars earn post season honors

    Three Barton Community College men’s basketball players recently earned post season honors. Sophomore transfer Tyler Corley led the selections landing on the second team of the KJCCC West Division All-Conference Team and honorable mention honors for the All-Region VI Team. Also a sophomore transfer, Darius Gibson was joined by two-year starter Raheem Johnson in earning honorable mention selections to the KJCCC West Division All-Conference Team.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team just couldn’t get over the hump Saturday afternoon in El Dorado and when they did, a controversial finish would end the Cougars season losing to Butler Community College 63-59 in the first round of the Region VI playoffs. Barton ends the season 20-11 while Butler advances to the Region VI Quarterfinals at 22-9.
  • Costly loss sends Cougars on the road for first round of playoffs

    Opportunity knocked for the Barton Community College men’s basketball team after the Cougars upset No. 16 Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson. Wednesday night at the Barton Gym the opportunity exited as the Cougars dropped a 74-72 contest to Garden City Community College. Having put itself in a position to host a home playoff game with the victory over Hutchinson, a win by the Cougars would have given Barton the No. 2 seed in the Region VI Tournament. Instead, the loss dropped the 20-10 Cougars into a four-way tie for third at 8-6 and sent the Cougars spiraling to the No. 6 seed in the region. Garden City’s victory improved the Broncbusters to 22-8 on the season and joined the third place log jam at 8-6 in conference play, dropping to the fifth seed due to tiebreakers. Barton will next head to El Dorado to take on Butler Community College in first round action. The Grizzlies finished third in the Jayhawk East at 7-5 and will bring a 21-9 overall record to the contest. Game time at The Power Plant is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
  • Cougars knock off No. 16 Hutchinson in the Sports Arena; pivotal game looms on Wednesday

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team shook up the conference and region standings Saturday night in the Hutchinson Sports Arena with an 87-82 victory over No. 16 ranked Hutchinson Community College. The victory vaulted the Cougars into a second place tie in the conference race and set up thrilling last night of regular season play as Region VI tournament seedings yet to be determined. Improving to 8-5 in conference play and 20-9 overall, Barton can secure at least first round Region VI home playoff game with a victory Wednesday at the Barton Gym against Garden City Community College. A loss by the Cougars could potentially spiral Barton down to a sixth seed. Hutchinson meanwhile falls to 22-7 on the season and into a second place tie with the Cougars and Pratt Community College at 8-5. Tip-off time for the Barton-Garden City matchup will be approximately 7:30 p.m. or twenty-minutes following sophomore recognition night held at the conclusion of the women’s game.
  • Cougars surrender halftime lead for fifth time in conference, fall by nine at Seward

    For the fifth time in Jayhawk Conference play this season, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team led at halftime only to leave with the taste of defeat. Wednesday night at The Greenhouse in Liberal, Kansas, the Cougars fought for a three-point intermission advantage but were outscored by twelve in the second half to lose 67-58 to Seward County Community College. Barton drops to19-9 on the season and more damaging drops to 7-5 in the conference standings while Seward County improved to 20-8 on the season and 10-2 in conference play to clinch its fourth straight conference championship. With only two games remaining, the Cougars still control its destiny on maintaining a first round playoff game with Garden City Community College and Cloud County Community College giving chase at one game back. Barton will travel to No. 16 ranked Hutchinson Community College on Saturday before wrapping up the regular season next Wednesday at home against Garden City which could determine a home playoff game. Tip-off time for Saturday’s matchup with the Dragons is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
  • Cougars keep first half streak alive to capture 97-86 win over Colby

    As been the case in all but four games this season for the Barton Community College men’s basketball team, the Cougars came out strong Saturday night at the Barton Gym then held on for a 97-86 win over Colby Community College. Despite shooting only 26% from beyond the arc the Cougars shot over 57% in the first half to build a twenty-two point intermission advantage. Leading at halftime for the fourteenth straight game, Barton gave up fifty-five second half points but kept the Trojans at arm’s reach to capture the victory. Barton improves to 7-4 in the conference and 19-8 overall while keeping Colby winless in the conference at 0-11 and dropping the Trojans to 9-18 overall. The Cougars remain in position to secure a home first round playoff game with three games remaining but the road will be a tough one. Barton will close out consecutive road trips to conference leader Seward County Community College on Wednesday then travel to No. 15 ranked Hutchinson Community College next Saturday before wrapping up the regular season on February 26 against Garden City. Game time for Wednesday’s matchup with the Saints in Liberal, Kansas, is set for 8:00 p.m.
  • Record setting Cougars win third straight, Parks hits for best shooting performance

    The hot shooting Barton Community College men’s basketball team put up record setting performances Saturday night at the Barton Gym to win its third straight by defeating Cloud County Community College 84-74. Getting redemption of an earlier season loss at Cloud, the Cougars struck for a record setting 70% shooting performance from behind the arc going 14-of-20 to record the single game percentage record. Freshman Deriece Parks played a huge part in the performance knocking down a record tying 80% of his deep shots to finish 8-of-10 and tie for the third most three-point makes in a single game. Leading the Barton charts with nine in a single game are Dennan Morrow (’10) and Gordon Scott (’98). Barton’s victory to improve to 18-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play, coupled with Hutchinson’s loss to Seward County, puts the Cougars in a position to vie for the conference title with five games remaining. However, Barton must first get past Pratt Community College at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena. The Cougars will also be looking for a little revenge as the Beavers, 15-9 overall and a half game behind Barton for third in the conference at 5-3, won 83-80 earlier in the conference season at the Barton Gym.
  • Cougars ride big first half lead out of Dodge

    Typical of the Barton Community College men’s basketball team this season, the Cougars jumped out to a big first half lead only to find the second half to be a dogfight. Wednesday night at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City was no exception as Barton led by nineteen then held on for the 76-67 win over Dodge City Community College. Shooting 43% behind the arc in the first half of play, the Cougars fought off Dodge City’s 42% performance in the second half by converting 19-of-24 free throws in securing the win. Barton improves to 5-3 in conference play and 17-7 overall while dropping Dodge City to 2-6 in conference and 13-11 overall. Playing the last two games on the road, Barton returns to the Barton Gym on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Cloud County Community College.
  • Corley delivers clutch free throws, Cougars escape last second shot for victory at Garden City

    Leading most of the night, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team found itself needing two Tyler Corley free throws and defending a last second shot to end a two game losing streak in Garden City. Fortunately for Barton both factors went in favor as the Cougars escaped 65-64 Saturday night over Garden City Community College. Barton improves to 4-3 in Jayhawk Conference play and 16-7 overall and while dropping Garden City to 3-4 in conference and 17-6 overall. The Cougars will conclude their two game conference road stretch of the schedule with a trip to Dodge City Community College on Wednesday for a 8:00 p.m. tip at the United Wireless Arena.
  • Cougars falter down the stretch to drop conference battle with No. 15 Hutchinson

    For thirty-five minutes Wednesday night at the Barton Gym, the atmosphere and action on the court was reminiscent of the good ‘ol days of Barton versus Hutchinson. However a two minute 14-0 run by the Blue Dragons late in the contest was the difference as the Barton Community College Cougars fell 98-85 to No. 15 ranked Hutchinson Community College. The loss drops the Cougars to 3-3 in conference play and 15-7 overall while co-conference leader Blue Dragons improve to 5-1 and 19-3 overall. The Cougars hit the road for consecutive conference road games beginning Saturday at Garden City Community College for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Following a trip to Dodge City Community College next Wednesday, the Cougars return home Saturday, February 8, against Cloud County Community College.
  • Two big stretches give Cougars 79-69 conference win at Colby; Fletchall gets 200th Barton win

    Closing both halves of play with a combined 34-11 advantage, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team earned its first conference road victory with a 79-69 win Sunday at Colby Community College. Trailing by twelve midway through the first half, the Cougars cranked up the defense to spur a 20-4 run to close the half to lead 38-31. A back and forth second half, Barton finally took control with 4:38 remaining as the Cougars outscored Colby 14-7 to capture the Jayhawk West road win. The victory was the 200th of Head Coach Craig Fletchall’s Barton career after winning No. 300 overall last Wednesday. Barton improves to 3-2 and 15-6 overall while Colby drops to 0-5 and 10-11.
  • Fletch gets 300th, Cougars pick up big conference victory over Seward County

    Coming off a disappointing road loss on Saturday, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team dominated the first half of play Wednesday night at the Barton Gym against Seward County Community College then held off a second half charge to win 72-66. The victory by the Cougars snapped a Seward County five game winning streak in the Barton Gym and earned Head Coach Craig Fletchall his 300th collegiate win. Barton improves to 2-2 in Jayhawk West play and 14-6 overall while handling Seward County its first conference loss of the season to drop to 3-1 and 13-7 overall. The Cougars will play a rare Sunday contest as Barton travels to Colby Community College for 4:00 p.m. tip-off at the Colby Community Building.
  • Second half collapse again dooms Cougars in conference loss at Cloud County

    For the second time in the young conference season, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team had the lead at halftime but failed to close out as the Cougars lost 91-82 Saturday night in Concordia to Cloud County Community College. Barton lead by as many as nine in the first half, settling for a seven point 45-38 lead at half, only to collapse in the second half giving up fifty-three second half points and shooting a dismal twenty-eight percent from the field. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-2 in Jayhawk West play and 13-6 overall while Cloud County wins their first conference game of the season to improve to 1-2 and 9-10 overall.
  • Cougars bounce back with solid effort over Dodge to pick up first conference win

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team bounced back from a disappointing loss to begin the conference season with a hard fought 96-86 victory over Dodge City Community College Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars improve to 1-1 in Jayhawk West play and 13-5 overall while Dodge City drops to 1-1 and 12-6. Next for the Cougars will be a trip to Concordia to take on Cloud County Community College in a 7:30 p.m contest. Cloud, who has started the conference with losses on the road at Dodge and Pratt, will look for home cooking to improve on their current 8-10 record.

    A typical game of “two halves”, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team squandered an eighteen point halftime lead to lose 83-80 Saturday night at the Barton Gym to Pratt Community College to open Jayhawk Conference play for both teams. Barton slips to 12-5 on the season while Pratt improves to 11-6. The Cougars will look to rebound on Wednesday as Barton will host Dodge City Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Barton Gym.

    In a seesaw game featuring twenty-two lead changes, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team began the spring semester of the schedule with a 108-103 double overtime victory Saturday afternoon at NJCAA Division II No. 19 ranked Brown Mackie College. The Cougars outscored the Lions 10-5 in the second additional frame of action to pick up the first win of 2014 and improve to 12-4 overall while dropping Brown Mackie to 9-5. Barton will begin Jayhawk Conference play at home on Saturday January 11 as the Cougars host Pratt Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at the Barton Gym.
  • Hot shooting Cougars close out semester with 98-69 win

    Getting nearly half their points from beyond the arc, the hot shooting Barton Community College men’s basketball team closed out closed out the fall portion of the schedule Monday evening at the Barton Gym with a 98-69 win over Hesston College. The Cougars shot over 56% for the game including a 9-for-15 first half three-point performance as Barton finished with fourteen threes in cruising to the win. Averaging 92.6 per game for the season’s first fifteen games, the Cougars fell just shy of scoring triple digits for the first time in five games. With Monday’s win Barton improves to 11-4 on the season while dropping Hesston to 2-13. Finishing up academic finals this week, the Cougars will take over two weeks away from before returning to campus to prepare for a January 4 game at NJCAA Division II No. 13 ranked Brown Mackie College. Barton will then have a week away from competition before beginning Jayhawk Conference play on January 11 as the Cougars host Pratt Community College.
  • Cougars outgun K-State Salina in 118-82 win

    For every member of the Barton Community College men’s basketball team, Thursday night’s added game provided a great opportunity for added experience. With each player getting significant playing time and scoring in the contest, the Cougars rolled to a 117-82 victory over the K-State Salina Club basketball team. Barton improves to 10-4 while K-State Salina drops to 0-6 on the season. The Cougars will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule on Monday when Barton hosts the Hesston College Larks for a 7:30 p.m. contest. It will also be the last game for the Lady Cougars as they will take on the Lady Larks at 5:30 p.m.

    If the Barton Community College men’s basketball team needed a win in the non-conference season, Saturday night’s remarkable comeback at the Barton Gym might be the remedy. After squandering a twenty-two point lead Friday, the Cougars fought through adversity to steal a 112-111 last second double overtime victory over Independence Community College to wrap up the Best Western Angus Inn/Cougar Booster Club Thanksgiving Classic. Barton improves to 9-4 on the season while Independence drops to 3-7. Due to having an open date in the 30-game schedule, the Cougars have added a game this Thursday against the K-State Salina Club basketball team. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Barton Gym with free admission. Fans are encouraged to bring food donation items to help benefit the local community during the holiday season.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team has added a game this week to its schedule, in part to filling a full thirty-game schedule while having the opportunity to help local community. The Cougars will take on the K-State Salina Club basketball team in a 7:30 p.m. contest Thursday at the Barton Gym with free admission to fans. In addition to the free admission, fans are encouraged to bring items to be used for a food bank donation. Children ages 6-12 are invited to cheer with the Barton Cheer Squad during the game and are to meet the quad on the blue cheer mat in the Kirkman Activity Center at 7:15 p.m.
  • Cougars can’t extinguish hot shooting Neosho, drop triple-digit shootout

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team looked unbeatable in the first half of Friday’s night matchup with the Neosho County Community College in the Best Western Angus Inn/Cougar Booster Club Thanksgiving Classic. Unfortunately for Barton, the Cougars ran across an equally looking unbeatable Panther team in the second half as Barton lost the 108-102 shootout. Barton shot 68.6% from the field in the first half but Neosho answered with a 68.8% effort from behind the arc to outscore the Cougars by twelve from long range to get the victory. Barton drops to 8-4 on the season while Neosho improves to 8-1. The Cougars will wrap up play in the Classic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Independence Community College while Neosho will play Brown Mackie College in the 3:00 p.m.
  • Cougars explode for fifty-three point victory over McPherson College JV

    Much like their women counterparts in the earlier game Tuesday night, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team christened the recently installed new scoreboard at the Barton Gym with a resounding 111-58 win over the McPherson College Junior Varsity. The Cougars used a 22-0 run to close out the first half and outscored the Bulldogs 46-7 up to the second half midpoint to cruise to the victory. Barton improves to 8-3 on the season while the junior varsity squad from McPherson drops to 2-4. The Cougars will next play two Jayhawk East foes this weekend at the Barton Gym in the Best Western Angus Inn/Cougar Booster Club Thanksgiving Classic. The Cougars will take on the high-flying Neosho County Community College Panthers on Friday then Independence Community College on Saturday. Both games set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball hung around with the No. 2 team in the nation but a second half barrage from beyond the arc doomed the Cougars in falling 107-80 to Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, Friday night. Barton held the Warriors to 2-of-17 first half long-range shooting but Indian Hills lit up the Cougar zone in the second half making 11-of-20 from long range. With their second straight loss, Barton falls to 6-3 on the season while Indian Hills remains perfect at 6-0. The Cougars will wrap up play in the Bowling RV Classic on Saturday in taking on 3-3 Marshalltown Community College at 4:30 p.m.
  • Cougars snap skid with 91-86 win over Marshalltown

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball snapped two-game slide Saturday afternoon in Ottumwa, Iowa, rallying from a halftime deficit to win 91-86 over Marshalltown Community College to wrap up play in the Bowling RV Classic. Having not lost three in a row since the 2010-11 season, Barton erased a 40-36 halftime deficit early in second half action then sunk ten free throws in the closing minute to hold on to the victory. Barton improves to 7-3 on the season while dropping Marshalltown to 3-4. The Cougars will return to the friendly confines of the Barton Gym for three games this week. Barton will host the McPherson College junior varsity on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip then set sights on the upcoming weekend Best Western Angus Inn/Cougar Booster Club Classic. The Cougars will first play the high flying undefeated Neosho County Community College on Friday then finish up Classic play on Saturday against Independence Community College. Approximate game times for both Friday and Saturday games is 7:30 p.m.
  • Barton men squander big leads, fall by five to Southeast

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t hold double digit leads Saturday in Salina, falling 82-77 to Southeast Community College. After leading by fifteen at halftime, Barton had separate seventeen and fifteen second half leads but squandered each. The final dagger came via a Southeast 17-0 run to tie it with 2:33 to play. From there Barton had no answer for the Southeast comebacks and was outscored 7-2 down the stretch to take the loss. Barton drops to 7-2 on the season while Southeast improves to 7-1. Barton will hit the road again next weekend heading to Ottumwa, Iowa, to play a pair of games in the Indian Hills Classic. The Cougars will take on the nation’s No. 2 ranked and host Indian Hills Community College at 7:30 p.m. Friday then conclude the weekend with a 4:30 p.m. Saturday contest versus Marshalltown Community College.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team picked up its sixth win of the early season with an eight point 76-68 win over Northwest Kansas Technical College Friday afternoon at the Legends Classic in Salina, Kansas. The Cougars controlled most of the game but needed a late 7-0 run to break a 61-all tie to get the victory. Barton improves to 6-1 on the season and drops Northwest to 3-4. Barton will next play Southeast Community College at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
  • Cougars put on the defensive clamps to escape with road win at Hesston

    A modest 4-0 run is not normally a huge point in most basketball games but Wednesday night in Hesston, Kansas, twenty-three seconds were pivotal in Barton Community College men’s basketball team escaping with a 62-53 win at Hesston College. Clinging to a four point lead with a little over two minutes to play, the Cougars got back-to-back steals and layups to push the lead to eight then held off the Larks’ comeback to pick up the non-conference victory. The win improves Barton to 5-1 on the season and keeps Hesston winless on the season at 0-5. The Cougars will next play in the Legends Classic in Salina, Kansas, taking on Northwest Kansas Technical College at 3:00 p.m. Friday then wrap up the Classic on Saturday in a 1:00 p.m. game against Southeast Community College. All games of the Legends Classic will be held at the Student Life Center on the campus of Kansas State University-Salina and can be viewed on the Barton Sports Network at www.BartonSports.com.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team exploded for fifty-six first half points enroute to a 100-78 victory Friday night over Allen Community College in the Coffeyville Classic. The win improves the Cougars to 4-0 on the early season and gives Head Coach Craig Fletchall a historic 189th win at the helm, surpassing Dan McGovern’s career mark at Barton. Allen meanwhile takes its first loss of the season and drops to 2-1. Barton will play the host and No. 15 ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens at 7:00 p.m. Saturday.
  • Gibson’s 27 not enough as Cougars fall at nationally ranked Coffeyville

    For the first eleven minutes of Saturday night’s clash with No. 15 ranked Coffeyville Community College, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team seemed prime to upset the Red Ravens on their home floor. Coffeyville had other plans closing out the last nine minutes on a 24-11 run to lead 39-27 at the break. Raheem Johnson’s eight points keyed an 8-2 Cougar run to open the second half to cut the deficit to six, before the Red Ravens’ 17-9 run stretched the lead to fourteen with ten to play. Back-to-back treys from Darius Gibson and Isaac Williams cut the deficit to five with a little over two minutes to play but Coffeyville sunk 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch for the victory. Barton drops to 4-1 on the season while Coffeyville improves to 4-0. The Cougars will hit the road again on Wednesday as both men’s and women’s teams play a doubleheader against Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas. Game time for women’s game set for 6:00 p.m. while the men’s game is slated to tip-off at 8:00 p.m.
