Barton cruises to win over Brown Mackie to remain unbeaten

The Barton Community College men's basketball team rolled to an easy victory over Brown Mackie College Tuesday night posting a 91-64 win at the Barton Gym in Great Bend. The Cougars jumped to an early lead on the Lions and never looked back, improving to 5-0 on the season. Carl Wallace just missed a triple-double for the Cougars as the freshman guard came up one assist shy of the feat. Brown Mackie falls to 4-3. Barton will be at home this weekend for the Cougar Booster Club Classic Friday and Saturday. The Cougars will play at 7 pm both nights.

 

Highlights
The Cougars turned a close game into a blowout in a matter of 4 minutes midway through the opening half of play. Barton led 18-13 with 12 minutes to play when Jalen Boyd started the run with a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass from Wallace. Wallace added layup on the next possession, grabbing a defensive rebound and going the distance for a fast-break layup. Another defensive rebound by Wallace led to another break when he found Chris Cantino for a bucket and a 25-13 with 10 minutes to play. Colin Beatty made it 27-13 before a Brown Mackie free throw snapped the 9-0 run.

 

But it was right back to work for the Cougars as they continued to push the ball up the floor. Boyd scored again on a fast-break layup then Adam Young knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 32-14. Dwayne Brunson capped a 7-0 and 16-1 overall with a jumper on the break to make it 34-14 with 8 minutes to play in the half. Barton led by 22 at intermission. The Cougars ended the half with 16 fast break points with just 6 turnovers. For the game Barton turned the ball over just 12 times with 26 fast-break points.

 

The Cougars dominated the inside, outscoring the Lions in the paint 56-36 and outrebounding Brown Mackie 57-35. In fact Barton had more offensive rebounds (21) than Brown Mackie did defensive rebounds (20). The biggest lead for Barton came at 35 points with 8 minutes left in the game. Brown Mackie never led.

 

Wallace paced the Cougars with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists. The freshman turned the ball over just one time in 30 minutes of play. He was joined in double figures by Beatty with 17, Cantino with 15 and Young with 11. Beatty also grabbed 8 rebounds and handed out 4 assists. Michael Jackson led Brown Mackie with 20 points.

 

The Cougars will be home this weekend for the Cougar Booster Club Classic to face Quakerdale and Independence. Quakerdale is still looking for its first win on the season in the midst of a tough road string while Independence has been impressive so far this season. The Pirates are 5-1 on the season with the only loss coming to Des Moines Area last weekend in a classic in Iowa. The Pirates beat the host school Iowa Western the next night and also have a 49-point win over Butler to their credit. In its most recent outing, Indy knocked off Carl Albert 82-66 Tuesday night. Hutchinson will also play Quakerdale and Independence in the Classic at 3 pm each day.
