  • Cougars hold off Thunderbirds to keep 2 game lead in Jayhawk West

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team continued to set the pace in the Jayhawk West with a 92-86 win over Cloud County Monday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars built a huge lead in the contest that proved to be just enough to withstand a furious Cloud rally. Barton improved to 8-1 in the West – a full 2 games ahead of 2nd place Butler and 2 1/2 ahead of Garden City. The 10th ranked Cougars are now 21-2 on the season. Cloud fell to 4-5 in the West and 15-8 overall. Barton will be back home Wednesday for another big battle against defending Region VI champion Seward in West play.
  • Barton ends season with loss to Cowley in semifinals of Region VI play

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team had its season come to an end thanks to some hot shooting by Cowley in the semifinals of the Region VI basketball tournament. The Cougars lost to the Tigers, 97-89 Sunday night at Koch Arena in Wichita to ends its season with a 28-5 record. That is the most wins by the Cougars since Barton won 29 games in 2001 and finished 7th at the NJCAA National Tournament. Cowley lost in the final to Garden City, which will advance to the NJCAA tournament with a 23-11 record. During the season Barton won the Jayhawk West title for the first time in 6 years. The Cougars came up short of its first Region VI title since 2001.
  • Barton wins thriller to put finishing touches on West championship

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team finished up its regular season with a thrilling 99-95 win over Pratt Saturday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars had to rally for the win in front of the biggest crowd of the season in one of the club’s most exciting games this year. The win put the finishing touches on the Barton’s Jayhawk West title season. Barton finishes the regular with a 26-4 overall mark and 13-3 West record to win the conference by 2 games. Pratt tied for 5th in the West with an 8-8 mark and finishes with an 18-12 overall record. The Cougars will play host to Labette in the opening round of the Region VI tournament. The Cougars are the top seed from the West while Labette (7-23) is the 8th seed from the Jayhawk East. Tip will be at 8 pm at the Barton Gym.
  • Barton rolls into quarterfinals with impressive opening round win

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team rolled into quarterfinal play of the Region VI tournament with an easy 96-65 win over Labette in 1st round action Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars bolted out of the gates to a 21-2 lead and were never challenged as the top seed from the Jayhawk West rolled by the 8th seed from the Jayhawk East. The Cougars, ranked No. 12 in the NJCAA, will await the winner of the Hutchison at Neosho County game tonight to see who their opponent will be in the quarterfinals Saturday night at 7 pm at Wichita’s Koch Arena. The Cougars improve to 27-4 with the win while Labette ends its season at 7-24.
  • Barton clinches Jayhawk West title with win at Colby

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team captured its 1st Jayhawk West title in 6 years with a 97-78 win at Colby Wednesday night in conference action. That, coupled with a Butler loss at Cloud County, gave the Cougars the outright title, holding a 2-game lead with just 1 game to play. Barton is now 12-3 in the Jayhawk and 25-4 overall. Colby finishes its season with a 5-25 overall mark and a 3-13 West record. Colby will miss the Region VI playoffs. The win secured the top spot from the West for Barton in the playoffs as well. The Cougars will open post season play 8 pm Tuesday against Labette at the Barton Gym. Barton will conclude its regular season Saturday when Pratt comes in for Homecoming.
  • Barton misses opportunity to secure share of West title; still leads league by 1 game

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team had a chance to secure at least a share of the Jayhawk West title Saturday night in El Dorado. But to do so the Cougars would have had to beat the league’s 2nd place team on its home floor. It didn’t happen. Butler, who has lost just once at home this year, rolled to an 86-70 win over the Cougars to keep the West race very interesting. Barton still leads at 10-3 with Butler 2nd at 8-4. Barton is 23-4 overall while Butler is 19-7. The Cougars – no longer with a chance to secure at least a share of the title with its next win – will host Hutchinson Wednesday night. The Cougars can lock down a top 3 West finish and remain a game up on the Butler in the loss column with a win.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team rebounded from its worst loss of the season to take a step closer the school’s 1st Jayhawk West title in 6 years. The Cougars knocked off rival Hutchinson, 81-69, at the Barton Gym Wednesday night to retain a 1-game lead in the loss column with just 2 games to play. Barton improved to 24-4 overall on the season and more importantly 11-3 in Jayhawk West action. Hutch fell to 17-10 and 6-7. Butler remains in 2nd with a 9-4 mark. The win secured Barton a home playoff game and at least a 2nd place finish in the West. Barton will be off Saturday before returning to action Wednesday at Colby.
  • Cougars back on winning trek with 83-63 road victory at Dodge

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team got back on the winning trek Saturday afternoon with an 83-63 road win over Dodge City at the Civic Center in Dodge. The 10th ranked Cougars used a big 1st half to build a lead on the Conquistadors on the way to the win, coming off the heels of just their 2nd loss in Jayhawk West play. Barton still leads the West with a 9-2 record and are now 22-3 overall. Dodge City fell to 3-8 in the West and 10-15 overall. Barton will be battling one of the teams with a chance to catch them for the West lead when Garden City comes to the Barton Gym Wednesday for an 8 pm tip. Garden is currently 3rd in the West with a 6-4 record in conference action. The Broncbusters are 16-8 overall.
  • Barton falls to Seward; beaten at home for 1st time this season

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team stumbled at home for the 1st time this year, losing to the defending Region VI Champions Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. Barton fell to Seward 77-65, snapping a 3-game win streak and tightening the race in the Jayhawk West. Barton still holds a 1-game lead in the West with an 8-2 mark. The Cougars are 21-3 overall. Barton is a full game up on Butler (7-3) and at least 2 1/2 games ahead of the rest of the field with 6 games to play. Seward – with back-to-back wins – has moved to 5-5 in the West and 18-6 overall. The Cougars will attempt to get back on track Saturday in Dodge City. The contest will tip at 4 pm at the Civic Center.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team has reached the halfway point of the Jayhawk West season sitting alone atop the conference race by a full 2 games. The Cougars finished their 1st trip through the West with an 83-71 win at Pratt Saturday night at the Lesh Sports Arena to move to 7-1 in the West and 20-2 overall. Barton won despite a season-high 28 turnovers and trailed much of the opening half before holding off a feisty Pratt team for the win. Pratt fell to 3-5 in the West and 13-9 overall. Barton will be back at home for games Monday and Wednesday against perennial West powers Cloud and Seward. Both games will tip at 8 pm.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team was the final team to be knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten in Jayhawk West play, losing a 74-70 decision to Hutchinson Wednesday night at the Sports Arena in Hutch. Barton trailed by as many as 18 in the contest before coming back to take the lead in the 2nd half. But Hutch rallied for the win in an effort to keep pace with the Cougars for the West title. Barton is now 5-1 in the West and 18-2 overall while Hutch is 4-1 and 15-4. The Cougars are off until Wednesday when they will host Colby in Jayhawk West action.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team had to battle its way to a 90-80 win over Colby Wednesday night at the Barton Gym in Great Bend. The Cougars fell behind early then could not put away the 4-win Trojans until the final stages. The win comes off Barton’s only Jayhawk West loss and keeps the Cougars alone on top of the standings. Barton is now 6-1 in the West and 19-2 overall. Colby falls to 2-6 and 4-18. Barton will wrap up its 1st swing through the West with a trip to Pratt Saturday.
  • Cougars pick up another road win with OT victory at Garden

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team continued its success on the road Wednesday night in Garden City with an 82-76 overtime win over the Broncbusters at the Perryman Complex to remain unbeaten in Jayhawk West play. The win moves Barton to 4-0 in the West with 3 of those 4 wins coming on the road. Barton, ranked No. 18 in the latest NJCAA poll, is now 17-1 on the season. Garden fell to 1-2 with the loss and 11-6 overall. Barton will back in action Saturday when the Cougars host Butler (2-1, 13-4). It will be Hall of Fame night at the Barton Gym with the men’s tip slated for 8 pm.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team stayed unbeaten in Jayhawk West play with an 89-77 win over Doge City Saturday night at the Barton Gym. It was the 1st time the Cougars played at home since late November as Barton improved to 3-0 with a win in its West home-opener. The Cougars, ranked No. 22 in the nation, held off a couple of Dodge City rallies in the 2nd half to improve to 16-1 overall this season. Dodge City fell to 0-3 in the West and 7-10 overall. Barton will be back on the road for the 3rd time in 4 West games when the Cougars travel to Garden City Wednesday for a 7:30 pm tip.

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team made it 2 in row on the road to open Jayhawk West play with an 89-83 overtime win over Seward County at the Green House in Liberal Wednesday night. The game was a battle of ranked teams as both clubs entered the contest tied for 22nd in the latest NJCAA poll. The Cougars were able to prevail in overtime in the contest after blowing a 10-point 2nd half lead. Barton is now 2-0 in the West and 15-1 overall on the season while Seward lost for the 2nd time to start West play and is now 0-2 in the conference and 13-3 overall. The Cougars will get to play at home Saturday when they host Dodge in the West home opener for Barton in an 8 pm tip.
  • Barton opens Jayhawk West season with win at Cloud

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team earned a big win to start the Jayhawk West season, defeating Cloud County 84-68 in Concordia Saturday night. The Cougars opened with the big road win over a team that had been ranked earlier in the season and was receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll in the Thunderbirds home gym. Barton’s win at Arley Bryant Gym was the 1st time the Cougars had won there in 3 years and only 2nd time in the past 5 seasons. Barton improves to 14-1 on the season with the win while Cloud falls to 11-4. Things don’t get any easier for Barton as they travel to No. 15 Seward County Wednesday to take on the 13-2 Saints, who are coming off a loss at Hutchinson to start West play.
  • Barton sweeps foes in easy wins at Jayhawk Shoot Out

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team rolled to a pair of easy wins at the Jayhawk Shoot Out this past weekend in Coffeyville. The Cougars pulled away in the 2nd half Friday night in an 81-53 drubbing of Independence then put Labette away in the opening half Sunday on their way to a 101-56 win. Barton is now 12-1 on the season with the sweep with just one non conference tilt left before January and Jayhawk West season. Barton will travel to Salina to take on Brown Mackie on New Year’s Eve.
  • Barton remains unbeaten with wins at Booster Club Classic

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team remained unbeaten on the season with a pair of wins at the Booster Club Classic this past weekend on the Cougars’ home floor. Barton defeated Eastern Oklahoma 78-53 Friday night and posted an 84-69 win over Brown Mackie Saturday. Barton is now 9-0 on the season but will not return home until January and the Jayhawk West schedule. The Cougars will be in Pratt again this upcoming weekend in the Thanksgiving Classic. Barton will play games at Noon on Friday and Saturday. Friday the Cougars will play Cecil College (Md) and Saturday the Cougars will tangle with the Friends JV.
  • Cougars win two midweek games; ready for Booster Club Classic

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team swept to a pair of wins Tuesday and Wednesday at the Barton Gym, beating Fort Scott and the Sterling JV. The Cougars defeated Jayhawk East foe Fort Scott Tuesday by an 86-73 margin then trounced the Sterling JV 106-46. Barton is now 7-0 for the year with two more games this week as the Cougars play 4 games in 5 days. Barton will take on Eastern Oklahoma Friday and Brown Mackie Saturday during the Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym. Tips for both games are slated for 7 pm.
  • Barton stays unbeaten with 2 wins in classic at Pratt

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team posted its best win to date during the Comfort Suites Classic at Pratt this past weekend to remain unbeaten on the season. The Cougars rolled to an easy win the opening night, beating Barclay College, 99-58, and then posted an 80-63 win over Northern Oklahoma-Enid to improve to 5-0 for the season. The games were the 1st away from Barton Gym. The Cougars will return home for 4 games this week, starting Tuesday against Fort Scott in a 7 pm tip.
  • Barton sweep foes at Sunflower Bank Classic; now 3-0 on young season

    The Barton Community College men’s basketball team cruised to a pair of easy wins at the Sunflower Bank Classic this past weekend at the Barton Gym. Barton defeated Labette 114-72 on Friday night then rolled to a 104-54 win over the Arkansas Tech JV Saturday night. Earlier in the week, the Cougars started their season with a 113-48 win over the Central Christian JV. Barton is now 3-0 on the season and has topped the 100-point mark every game so far. Barton will be in Pratt next weekend for the Comfort Suites Classic where the Cougars will play Barclay and Northern Oklahoma-Enid.
