  • Cougar season ends with loss to Cowley in Region VI quarterfinals

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team saw its season come to an end with a 58-49 loss to Cowley Sunday afternoon in quarterfinal action of the Region VI Tournament at Koch Arena in Wichita. Barton had trouble shooting the ball thanks to a tough Cowley defense, hitting just 24 percent from the floor to finish its season at 23-9. The Cougars had their chances in the 2nd half but couldn’t overcome a big lead the Tigers built late in the 1st half and early in the 2nd half. Cowley will move on to the semifinals to face Coffeyville. Seward and Cloud will face each other in the other semifinal.
  • Barton survives overtime scare; heads to Region VI quarterfinals

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team displayed the dictionary definition of the tournament cliché ‘survive and advance’ Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars rallied from a late deficit to sent the game to overtime then held off Allen County in that overtime for an 89-84 win to start the Region VI Tournament. The win moved the Cougars (23-7) into the quarterfinals where they will play the top seed from the Jayhawk East Cowley. Cowley enters the game ranked No. 8 and has a 29-2 record this season. Barton has now won 7 straight games. The two teams will play Sunday at 1 pm at Koch Arena in Wichita as the 1st of 4 quarterfinal games.
  • Barton heads to post season on 6-game winning streak

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team survived a lethargic 2nd half Wednesday night at the Community Building in Colby, coming away with an 86-70 road win in Jayhawk West play to finish the regular season with a10-6 West mark and 4th place in the conference. Barton (22-7) has won 6 straight and 8 of its last 9. The Cougars are 10-3 since starting the year 0-3 in the West. Colby fell to 3-12 in the West and 7-22 overall. The Cougars will have Saturday off before hosting a Region VI 1st round playoff game Wednesday at 8 pm at the Barton Gym. The Cougars will most likely face Allen County in that contest but could still see Neosho County if Allen wins at Independence at Neosho loses to Cowley.
  • Cougars run winning streak to 5; roll by West leading Hutch, 97-75

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team continued its hot play of late with a resounding 97-75 win over Jayhawk West leading Hutchinson Saturday night at the Barton Gym. The win was the 5th straight for the Cougars and their 7th in the last 8 games. Barton secured a home playoff spot with the win, assuring its self of a top 4 finish in the West. The Cougars are now 9-6 in the West with only a trip to Colby Wednesday left in the regular season. Most other teams in the West still have 2 dates left to play. Barton is 21-7 overall while Hutch fell to 21-7 overall as well and is now 11-3 in the West. Hutch is tied with Seward at 11-3 while Cloud is 10-4. Barton could still finish as high as 3rd in the West but would need Cloud losses at home to Dodge and at Hutch.
  • Barton makes it 4 straight; ‘Pack the House’ Saturday against Hutch

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team made it 4 straight wins Wednesday night with a 90-68 victory over Butler at the Barton Gym in Jayhawk West play. The Cougars used a 17-2 run in the 2nd half to put the game away after Butler spent much of the contest on the heels of the Cougars. Barton collected its 20th win of the year and is now 20-7 overall and 8-6 in the West. Butler falls to 9-18 overall and 4-10 in the West. The Cougars will be back home Saturday in the final regular season home game when Hutchinson comes to the Barton Gym in ‘Pack the House’ night. Barton can clinch a home playoff spot with a win over the Blue Dragons. Tip will be at 8 pm.
  • Cougars earn big road win at Garden; control fate for home playoff game

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team has strung together its longest winning streak of the Jayhawk West season and has climbed above the .500 mark in conference play for the 1st as well. The Cougars did that with a big road win Saturday night in Garden City, defeating the Broncbusters 81-73 to move into sole possession of 4th place in the West. That would get Barton a home playoff game in the Region VI tournament just 2 more than weeks away. Barton is now 7-6 in the West and has won 3 straight West games. The Cougars are 19-7 overall. Garden City drops to 6-7 in the West and 17-9 overall. Next on the docket for the Cougars will be Butler County at the Barton Gym Wednesday night. The Cougars beat Butler in El Dorado earlier this year.
  • Barton knocks off West co-leader Cloud; in hunt for home playoff game

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team stayed in the hunt for a home playoff game to start the Region VI Tournament in a few weeks with an 89-81 win over Jayhawk West co-leader Cloud County Saturday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars improved to 5-6 in Jayhawk West play with just 5 regular season games remaining. Barton, which has seen any chance of a West title disappear, is sitting in 5th place in the West with the top 4 teams getting a home playoff game. The Cougars are just 1 game out of 4th place. Barton is now 17-7 overall. Cloud fell out of that tie for 1st in the West and is now 7-3 in West action and 15-9 overall. Barton will get another West co-leader Wednesday when Seward visits the Barton Gym. Seward is 8-2 in West play and 20-4 overall. The Saints are riding a 7-game winning streak, not having lost since Barton won 81-57 in Liberal. Barton has now won 5 of its last 8 West games.
  • Cougars come up short in bid for 3rd straight win; lost at Dodge 76-74

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team had a chance to leave the Civic Center in Dodge City with a win, but for the 3rd straight year, came up just short. This time a Chris Jackson 3-pointer in the final seconds just skid off the iron for Barton as Dodge City held off Barton for a 76-74 Wednesday night. Barton was looking for its 3rd straight win but instead fell to 4-6 in the Jayhawk West and 16-7 overall this season. The Cougars trek won’t get an easier as two of the 3 teams leading the West will pay visits to the Barton Gym in the next week. Cloud County will be in Great Bend Saturday for the Cougars’ Homecoming.
  • Cougars make it back-to-back West wins; roll by Pratt 89-71

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team is beginning to string together some wins, earning back-to-back Jayhawk West wins for the 1st time this season with an 89-71 win over Pratt Saturday at the Barton Gym. The Cougars have on 3 of their last 4 and are now 4-5 in the West after stumbling out of the blocks at 0-3. Barton is 16-6 overall this season. Pratt fell to 3-6 in the West and 9-14 on the season. Barton will go after its 3rd conference road win of the season Wednesday at Dodge City as the Cougars go for their 3rd straight win.
  • Barton rebounds from loss at Hutch with big win over Colby

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team earned a home Jayhawk West win Saturday night, rolling to an 88-73 win over Colby at the Barton Gym. The win was the 1st home win of the West season for Barton, after dropping its 1st 2 home conference games. The Cougars are now 3-5 in the West, playing 5 of those 1st 8 on the road the 1st time through the conference slate. Barton lost Wednesday at league-leading Hutchinson 93-77. The Cougars improved to 15-6 overall with the win over Colby while Colby fell to 2-5 in the West and 6-15 overall. Barton will be off for a week before host Pratt Saturday at 8 pm.
  • Barton holds off Butler rally to pick up road win in West play

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team once again built a nice lead and once again watched as the opponents came roaring back. This time – as has not been the case in previous games – the Cougars held off Butler County to earn a 92-80 road win in Jayhawk West play. Barton earned that win at the Power Plant in El Dorado Saturday night to move to 2-4 in the West and 13-5 overall. Butler is also 2-4 in the West and 7-12 overall. The Cougars will go after their 3rd road win in the conference Wednesday when they travel to Hutchinson to take on the West leading Blue Dragons. Hutch is the only unbeaten team in the West at 5-0. Tip will be 7:30 pm at the Sports Arena.

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team emphatically put an end to its losing streak to start Jayhawk West play with an 81-57 win over Seward County Saturday night at the Green House in Liberal. The win put an end to a 3-game skid to start the West season as the Cougars improve to 1-3 in the conference and 13-4 overall. Barton dominated the 2nd half of action, outscoring Seward 36-14. The Saints fell to 13-4 overall and 1-2 in the West. Barton will return home Wednesday to host Garden City. Garden is 2-2 in the West and 13-4 overall.
  • Barton struggles at Cloud; falls to 0-3 in Jayhawk West

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team is still in search of its 1st Jayhawk West win of the season, dropping its 3rd straight conference contest to start the slate Wednesday night in Concordia. The Cougars were never in the game, losing to Cloud County 84-53 at Arley Bryant Gymnasium. Barton is now 12-4 overall this year. Cloud improved to 2-0 in the West and 10-6 on the season. It won’t be an easy task Saturday going after that 1st West win again as Barton travels to Seward County to take on the Saints. Seward is 1-1 in the West and 13-3 overall. Tip will be at 7:30 from the Greenhouse in Liberal.

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team could easily be 2-0 in Jayhawk West play but instead are now 0-2 after losing another late 2nd half lead. Barton led by 7 with 4 minutes to play, but scored just 2 points those final 4 minutes as Dodge City left the Barton Gym Saturday night with an 83-79 win over the Cougars. Barton is now 12-3 overall and will take their 0-2 mark on the road in West play for the next two contests. Barton will travel to Concordia to take on Cloud County Wednesday night then Liberal for a contest with Seward County Saturday night. Dodge City is now 1-1 in the West and 9-6 overall.
  • Barton drops West opener at Pratt in final seconds

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team lost it Jayhawk West opener Wednesday in Pratt, falling 70-68 at the Lesh Sports Arena. It was a game that saw Barton lead by as many as 14 points in the 2nd before limping home and losing all that cushion. Pratt’s only lead in the final 15 minutes of the game came with the final score. The loss was just the 2nd on the season for Barton, now 12-2 and 0-1 in West play while Pratt improves to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in the West. Barton will play Dodge City Saturday at the Barton Gym as the Cougars open the home slate of the West schedule, which will see Barton at home just once in the first 4 games and twice in the 1st 7 West outings.
  • Barton pulls off improbable comeback win over Coffeyville; go 2-0 at Shoot Out

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team staged one of the most exciting comebacks in Jayhawk Shoot Out history Saturday night, rallying for a 96-95 win over host Coffeyville in the final seconds. Barton trailed by 7 points with less than 20 seconds to play before hitting 3 3-pointers in the final 17 seconds against the No. 12 ranked Red Ravens. Qa’rraan Calhoun hit a 3-pointer with 0.5 seconds to play to cap the comeback. Barton also won the morning before, 77-72 over Labette, to complete the weekend with a 2-0 mark. The win over the ranked Red Ravens in a rematch of the Region VI final this past spring, might propel Barton (9-1) into the Top 20 this week. The Cougars are done until late December when they will travel to New Jersey for games Dec. 28, 29, and 30. Jayhawk West play will tip Jan. 2 at Pratt.
  • Cougars drop 1st game of season in Nebraska; finish 1-1 at Thanksgiving Classic

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team lost for the 1st time this season, splitting games at the Thanksgiving Classic in Norfolk, Neb. this past weekend. The Cougars lost Friday night to the host Northeast Nebraska, 84-71 then bounced back for a convincing 96-72 win over Central Nebraska. Barton is now 7-1 on the season and will be in action this weekend at the Jayhawk Shoot-Out in Coffeyville. The highlight of the event will be a Barton-Coffeyville rematch of the 2007 Region VI Championship Friday night at 7 pm.
  • Barton stays unbeaten with win over Northern Oklahoma Enid

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team moved to 6-0 on the season with a pair of wins at the Cougar Booster Club Classic at the Barton Gym this past weekend. Barton easily won Friday over the Sterling JV, 125-49, then captured a win over Northern Oklahoma-Enid the following night, 92-81. The two games completed the home non conference portion of the Barton slate. The Cougars will be in Norfolk, Neb. Thanksgiving weekend then in Coffeyville for the Jayhawk Shoot Out the following weekend to wrap up play in the 1st semester.
  • Cougars move to 4-0 with wins at Barton Classic

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team received its 1st test of the season Saturday night at the Barton Classic, coming away with a passing grade in a 77-67 win over Brown Mackie at the Barton Gym. Friday night the Cougars rolled to a 115-50 win over the Sterling JV and now stand 4-0 on the young season. The Cougars will be back on the floor this weekend when they host the Booster Club Classic. It will be the final home games of the non conference portion of the schedule. The Cougars won’t be back at the Barton Gym until Jan. 5 to host Dodge City.
  • Barton rolls to easy wins to open basketball season

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball team had very little trouble in its opening weekend, rolling to a pair of wins at the Military Appreciation Classic at the Barton Gym in Great Bend. The Cougars defeated the Central Christian JV Friday night 122-42 then followed Saturday with a 101-56 win over Barclay College. Barton will be at home next weekend as well, facing the Kansas Wesleyan JV Friday and Brown Mackie Saturday at 8 pm in the Barton Classic.
  • Cougars look to New York, Texas for out-of-state class

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball has released its list of out-of-state singing as the Cougars come off a season which saw them come within one game of the NJCAA National Tournament. With the help of that finish, Barton has inked 5 out-of-state signings – with a very New York flavor and a bit of Texas. Four of the 5 signing come from New York with the 5th from Texas. One of the New York players attended school in Dallas as well.
  • Cougars men sign pair of in-state basketball players

    The Barton County Community College men’s basketball, fresh off an appearance in the Region VI title game, began releasing its list of signees with a pair of instate players. Included in the list is a local product in Matt Simmons. Also signed was Derby senior Chip Steven.
