Barton sweeps foes in Shoot Out; remains pefect at 10-0 Highlights Barton shot out of the gates to a 31-13 lead on Johnson as the Cougars thoroughly dominated the opening 18 minutes of action. But while the Cougars missed 2 field goals, a free throw and committed 2 turnovers in the final two minutes of the 1st half, Johnson drew to within 31-17 by halftime. It seemed meaningless at the time, but the first 12 minutes of the 2nd half were much like the final 2 minutes of the opening half and Johnson had built a 46-40 lead on Barton with 8:30 to play in the game. During those 14 minutes of play between the 2 halves, the Cavaliers outscored Barton 33-9. It was at that point the Cougars recaptured some momentum. Back-to-back buckets by Thiago Cordeiro and Antowine Lamb cut the lead to 46-44 before the Cavaliers would even get another shot off. Within two more minutes Ivan Evans hit 2 free throws and Chris Jackson scored to cap an 8-0 run and give Barton a 48-46 lead. Johnson briefly recaptured that lead on a 3-pointer but the Cougars countered with an Evans basket for a 50-49 lead with five minutes to play and never trailed again in the contest. The lead grew to 55-51 on a Matt Green 3-pointer with 2 minutes to play and Barton led on despite missing a free throw with 7 seconds left to give the Cavaliers a shot to win as well as being outrebounded 5-1 in the final 1:30 of the contest. Thankfully for the Cougars, the Johnson shot to win missed and Barton left with a 55-54 win. Cordeiro had a big game for the Cougars, recording his 2nd triple-double of his career with the Cougars. The sophomore from Brazil scored 10 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and recorded 10 blocks, including a block of an attempted Johnson layup in the final minute of the contest that led to Barton's only rebound in the last 1:30 of the game. Omar Johnson led Barton with 14 points while Evans just missed a double-double with 10 points and 9 boards to go with a team-high 5 assists. Saturday night the Cougars closed out their 2006 Shoot Out in grand fashion, rolling by Cowley, 73-52. Barton trailed just once – 3-0 – in the contest and after a 7-7 tie the contest was never tied again. Barton went on a 7-0 run after that final tie to take a 14-7 lead and gradually pulled away from there. Another 7-0 run to end the opening half gave the Cougars a 32-20 halftime lead. Barton continued to build its lead in the 2nd half, reaching the 20-point mark just minutes into the 2nd half as the Cougars opened on a 10-0 run and a 42-20 lead. The biggest Cougar lead of the contest was 68-40 with 5 minutes to play in the contest. Evans scored 22 points – 15 in the 2nd half. During those final 20 minutes of action, Evans was 6-for-6 from the floor, of which 2 were 3-pointers. Evans also led Barton with 8 rebounds. Johnson again reached double figures, scoring 12 points and handing out 7 assists, grabbing 7 rebounds, collecting 2 steals and committing just 1 turnover from his point guard spot. Alex Pyle and Blaine Clark each had 9 for Barton. Stats Next -30- Check out Barton County Basketball Online at www.bartonccc.edu/sports |
