Cougars wrap up forgettable day with loss to Pratt

Cougars wrap up forgettable day with loss to Pratt
The Barton County Community College men's basketball team had a day to forget Thursday. The morning started with former coach Ryan Wolf being indicted on 36 federal counts. Mid-afternoon brought news the College declared the men's basketball ineligible for post season this year in the wake of the Wolf indictment. Finally, the evening brought the Jayhawk West opener -- a home loss to Pratt, 69-55. The loss drops Barton to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in West action. Pratt is now 8-7 and 1-0.

Highlights
Pratt jumped to a 20-2 lead on the Cougars during the opening 10 minutes of the game before Barton was able to shake off the slow start and begin to rally. The Cougars, though, would find the hole they dug too deep to crawl out of. Barton would trim to lead to 8 points in the opening half before a Pratt rally late gave the Beavers a 36-22 lead at the intermission.

The Cougars would again spend the entire 2nd half chipping away at the Pratt lead only to see the Beavers push it back up. The first push cut the lead to 43-39 with just less than 13 minutes to play before the Beavers ran the margin back to 9 points a couple of minutes later. That lead reached 17 points with 5 minutes to play. Barton would cut that lead 8 with several chances to trim it to 6 with just more than 2 minutes to play, but failed to convert before the Beavers pushed the final margin back to 14 points.

The Cougars struggled in nearly every phase of the game, hitting a season-low 29 percent from the floor and just 10 percent from behind the 3-point line at 3-of-30. Barton was also less than 50 percent from the free throw line during the contest. Dylan Channel and Marcus Barrett each came off the bench to score 9 points to lead Barton. Pratt was led by Jarvis Nichols with 18 points as Trevor Rolfs, a former Cougar player, picked up his 1st collegiate win as a head coach.
