Whaley earns 2nd team All-American honors
Barton County Community College sophomore basketball standout Robert Whaley was named as a 2nd team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association, the second straight year he has earned recognition by the NJCAA. Last season Whaley was a 1st team All-American as a freshman.
Whaley is the 1st player in Barton County history to be honored both his freshman and sophomore years for the Cougars. He moved into the Top 10 all-time leading scorers at Barton County this past season, ending his career with 1,032 points. That is No. 9 on the all-time list. He is also 5th all time in field goals made with 432. Whaley earned Top 5 marks in career field goal percentage .531 (3rd) and blocked shots 154 (2nd).
Whaley's selection marks the 5th consecutive season a Cougar has been selected to the 1st or 2nd All-American team by the NJCAA.
This past season Whaley led the Cougars to a 28-4 record, ending with a loss to Cloud County in the quarterfinals of the Region VI tournament. Whaley paced Barton County with 16.9 points a contest and 7.8 rebounds. He also averaged 1.9 blocked shots per game.
Whaley earned nomination for All-American after being the 2nd highest vote getter on the All-Region VI ballot. Seward County's Devonne Giles was the top vote getter in the region and was named 1st team All-American. Giles averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Saints, who finished 3rd in the Jayhawk West. Colby's E.J. Drayton was an honorable mention pick. Whaley, while being named 2nd team All-American and 1st team All-Region VI, did not receive a place on the Jayhawk West All-Conference 1st, 2nd, or 3rd teams. Barton, who won the West by 3 games, had no one on the 1st team.
Whaley has signed to play next season for the University of Cincinnati. He has also drawn interest from the NBA.
