Barton knocks off Coffeyville; wins two at ShootOut Barton defeated Coffeyville 81-79 after winning 75-63 over Highland. The Cougars are now 13-1 as take nearly a month off for the Holiday Break. Highlights In the end it was the Cougars who knocked off Coffeyville (8-3) for the 8th time in the last 9 meetings and sending Coffeyville to defeat on it's home court for the first time in 33 games. The contest featured 19 lead changes and 11 ties and once again came down to a last season shot. Things didn't look good for the No. 4 ranked Cougars with 5 minutes to play, following Coffeyville's third consecutive 3-pointer to give the Red Ravens a 73-64 lead. That is when freshman Justin Rose stepped up for the Cougars. Rose knocked down a trey, then stole the ball and hit a lay-up for quick 5-0 in 30 second to make it 73-69. Barton still trailed by two with under two minutes to play when Rose picked the pocket of Coffeyville's Fred Marshall at the top of the key for another uncontested layup and a 77-all tie with 1:43 to play. Lechon Trammer gave the Red Ravens the lead back with just more than one minute to play before Robert Whaley tied it up for the Cougars. Whaley missed a baseline jumper that kicked out to the free throw line, but the 6-10 sophomore chased his own rebound down and drained the 15-footer with 50 to play to even the game for the 11th time. Next it was Randy Pulley's turn to play hero. Pulley stood in the lane as Marshall penetrated for a game-leading basket, but Pulley drew a charging foul from Marshall with 31 seconds to give the ball back to the Cougars for one final shot at a win. Barton ran the clock inside 10 seconds when Pulley worked his way in the lane and hit a 5-foot floating jumper with 3 seconds to play. Coffeyville quickly inbounded the ball to midcourt and called time out with 2.6 seconds left for one final effort. That effort ended up being a 35-foot desperation attempt, as Barton's defense did not allow the Red Ravens a good look at the basket. Rose led the way for the Cougars as the guard from Junction City hit 9-of-12 shots from the floor, including a 4-of-5 effort being the 3-point arc for 22 points. He also added four steals. Rodney Epperson added 18 and Pulley 15 points and 8 assists. Whaley just missed another double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Nouha Diakite made it five starters in double figures once again for Barton with 10 points. Tommie Eddie scored 24 for Coffeyville and Marshall added 22. Against Highland, the Cougars struggled at times but never trailed in a 74-63 win over the Scotties. Highland (8-1) entered the game as the only unbeaten team in either the Jayhawk East or West. Whaley led Barton with a 27-point, 10-rebound effort. Rose added 10 points as well while Pulley again handed out 8 assists.
